Barbara Jo Johnson, a devoted mother, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on June 24, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Earl Elkins and Addie Ward Elkins.
Throughout her life, Barbara was a nurturing presence. She dedicated herself to her husband and caring for her four children. Her kindness extended beyond her family as she lovingly watched over many children, sharing not only her home but also imparting lessons about God and life. Her love for flowers was reflected in her yard where she planted a wide variety every year. She adored hummingbirds, keeping a vast collection of them in her home. Music was another passion of hers; she sang in a quartet, praise team, and choir at her church. Though small in stature, Barbara Jo had remarkable strength, both inside and out. Every weekday from 12:00 - 2:00 pm you could find her watching her favorite Soap Opera which she consistently watched for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Johnson; brother, Kent Elkins.
She is survived by her children, Steven Johnson (Angie), Gary Johnson, Gail Johnson, and Laurie Ann Gibson; her sister, Paralee Hunnicutt; grandchildren, April Nation (Ray), Brandi Lord (Derek), Daniel Gibson, Amber Johnson, and Sophia Hattaway (Austin). She embraced being a great-grandmother to Hanna, Austin, Carter, Hunter, Conner, Eliana, Braydon, and Hadleigh.
Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Lord & Stephens Funeral Homes, EAST, Athens, starting with visitation at 12:00 PM followed by the service at 2:00 PM. Entombment will immediately follow the service at Evergreen Memorial Park.
