Barbara Keithley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium, Inc. on Aug. 14, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Barbara Keithley, a lifelong sports enthusiast, devoted grandmother, cherished friend and an individual with a bit of well-earned stubbornness, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Keithley was born on July 18, 1944 in Milton, DE. She was the daughter of the late James and Delema Reed.

A passionate baseball fan, Barbara's heart beat for her beloved Philadelphia Phillies. Whenever they played, she was glued to the game, cheering with unwavering enthusiasm. She enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Eagles and was so excited that she got to watch them win not one, but two Super Bowls. Her love of football continued through watching the Penn State Nittany Lions. Later in life, she discovered a love for Villanova's basketball team, the Wildcats, which brought her immense joy and excitement with every game she watched.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Charles and two sisters Lilian Oldham and Linda Lou Reed. She is survived by her son, Richard Keithley (Beth), and his sons, Bryan and Dale;

her daughters, Sharon Keithley and Cheryl Heimbach (Jed), along with Cheryl's children, Tanner and Cierra; and her two sisters and brother, Rita Schlitter, Franklin Reed (Clara), and Helen Walls. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. Barbara's dear friend, Bob Weightman, was a constant source of companionship and joy throughout the years, and their friendship meant the world to her.

Barbara dedicated nearly 20 years of her career to both Super Fresh and the Commissary at Dover Air Force Base before retiring. In retirement, she cherished spending time with her beloved "sidekicks," her grandchildren Tanner and Cierra. Barbara's greatest pride and joy was her grandchildren. Whether it was sitting in the stands at Cierra's cheer competitions, always beaming with pride, or teaming up with Tanner to get into their latest bit of mischief, she was never happier than when she was with them. She was their biggest cheerleader and partner-in-crime. When not with them, she enjoyed quality moments with her sister Helen, making the most of her well-earned retirement.

Known lovingly as a night owl, Barbara could always be counted on for a late-night chat or a game replay-but don't expect her to be up early; she was not a morning person and lived life by her own clock. While many tried, few succeeded at catching her on camera. She would make a fuss about having her picture taken. Barbara's warmth, passion, and devotion to her family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Barbara was one of a kind, tough as Philly, loyal as in fan in green, red, or blue, and full of a quiet, steady love. Rest easy, Barbara. Your team spirit, late-night wisdom, and unconditional love will never be forgotten. Fly, Eagles, Fly-she'll be cheering from above. In her honor, hug your grandchildren, sleep in when you can, stay sassy, and never forget to root for the home team!

For those who wish to attend her services, per Barbara's wishes, please dress in your favorite sports team's apparel.

A viewing will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025 from 11 AM to 12 PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin at 12 PM. Burial will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Delaware.
