Barbara Matthis Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pippin Funeral Home - Camden Wyoming on Nov. 19, 2025.
Barbara Alexander Matthis, aged 91 and lovingly referred to as Momps, Bobbie, Grandma, Grand-Bobbie, and Cousin, serenely transitioned to eternal rest on October 29, 2025, in her Felton, Delaware residence. Barbara has been joyfully reunited in heaven with her adored husband, Julius Matthis, after 67 years of marriage, and her deeply cherished daughter, Sharon "Sherri" Matthis Butler.
Born into the Alexander family, with Andrew and Dell Alexander as parents, in Newark, New Jersey, on July 30, 1934, Barbara was the second of seven siblings. Her educational journey at Arts High School in Newark was a time for cultivating her innate creativity, passions, and talents.
Barbara was indeed a "Hidden Figure" of her era, dedicating over 20 years of her career to Lockheed Martin Inc., where she excelled in assembling electronic circuit boards for aircraft utilized in military and business operations. Her professional path continued at Johnson and Johnson, contributing to a team that pioneered the development of the first human heart stent.
A self-educated tailor and designer, Bobbie had a flair for creating custom attire for clients and friends, alongside decorative home accents. Known as a culinary virtuoso among 'framily,' Momps was celebrated as the 'Queen of Desserts,' always ready to whip up sumptuous meals. Grand-Bobbie's solace was found in her gardening, a hobby that adorned her home with beauty. Barbara and her husband Julius, a visionary duo, tackled numerous projects together, sharing a love for jazz and the vibrant scene of clubs and speakeasies during their prime.
Upon retirement, Barbara's engagement with the Elegant Ebony Women Red Hat Society became a cherished part of her life, embracing the camaraderie and hosting various gatherings, including book clubs and glamorous luncheons, where red hats and purple attire were the day's uniform. Barbara's remarkable sense of humor and storytelling prowess were unforgettable.
Her guiding principle in life was straightforward: Get it done right-no excuses.
Barbara was preceded in death by her siblings: Dorothy Wilson, Grace, Andrew, James, Richard, and William Alexander; and a special cousin, Waltin Young.
She leaves behind a legacy through her son, Gary "Raj" (Gloria); granddaughters, Janelle Butler Anderson (Terrance), and Luandra Flowers (Brandon); three great-grandchildren, Devon, Neah, and Ludranie; and one great-great-granddaughter, Aria. Barbara's memory will also be fondly remembered by her best friend, Meade Derveaux, and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
A memorial service for Barbara will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Pippin Funeral Home at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior.
