Barbara Mehringer Obituary

Barbara Hawkins Mehringer, 90, wife of Charles W. Mehringer of Pawcatuck, CT, passed away on September 28, 2025. Born in Westerly, RI, daughter of the late James W. and Ruth Sutcliff Hawkins, and sister to Dr. James W. Hawkins of San Diego, CA.

Barbara graduated from St. Michaels School, Stonington High School, and Mitchell College. She enjoyed traveling as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines and later worked as a nurse.

Barbara was the mother of three wonderful daughters, Gretchen (Brian) Stalters, Gwyn (Chris) Veglas, both of Norton, MA and Heidi (Michael) Macina of North Stonington, CT. She was the very proud grandmother of six cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Corey and Brandon Stalters, Andrew (Kassidy) Veglas and Jack Veglas (fiance Hannah Goldman), and Michelle Macina her granddaughter, all of whom she loved so very much.

She was the most unselfish grandmother who volunteered tirelessly to help her children and grandchildren in school, sports and the arts. She spent countless hours volunteering for St. Michaels Parish, enjoyed working on Genealogy as well as quilting and sewing.

A private family burial will be held. In lieu of flowers please donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Stand Up for Animals, Westerly, RI. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, Westerly is handling arrangements. For online condolences go to www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com

So very sorry Gretchen and sisters. Your mom was such a wonderful woman. Always so very nice to me. Not sure how it ended up happening. I made sweet bread couple times and brought them a loaf. My condolences to you all. Didn't realize she was that old. Such a beautiful woman inside and outside. Alzira

I met Mrs. Mehringer in 2010 when working on the St. Michael Parish History book. Over the following years she had become a dear friend and mentor of local history to me. Whenever she visited the library, she always saved clippings of newspaper articles that might benefit my own research. I always looked forward to our conversations on the phone in more recent years. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren. I'm very grateful to have been able to call her a friend.
