Barbara Ann Melton
Barbara Ann Melton was born in Sumter, South Carolina on May 11, 1953, to Clonnie and Sarah McCoy Melton, known to her family as "Sandra". Always nearby were Henry and Dorothy Ramona Jackson who were second parents to her and their children, her extended siblings.
Growing up in South Carolina Barbara attended Lincoln High School in Sumter before moving to Pennsylvania, where she graduated from William Penn High School in Philadelphia.
Barbara traveled back to South Carolina often. While there as a young woman she met Robert Knight. From their relationship came William T. Melton. Several years later Barbara met Donald F. Hurts Sr. and from their union Terence D. Melton was born.
Barbara put her intelligence into play and studied at Morris College before going on to work at the United States Postal Service. She later worked for and retire from the Department of Veteran Affairs Regional Office. She took great pride in her career of service. A talented seamstress, she would make elaborate quilts. She also was a huge poker fan and enjoyed watching the World Series of Poker. Barbara was everybody's advocate, believed in using your voice and encouraged everyone to always vote.
Barbara had a big heart and was very caring. She was known for being outspoken and quick to let you know if things were not right. Through many trials and tribulations Barbara's spirit remained strong and her love for her family constant. She was a tigress when it came to her family. There was nothing she wouldn't do for family.
Barbara is survived by her son: William T. Melton. Her siblings: Darryl Jackson, Eric Jackson, Adrian Jackson, Dorothea Jackson. Her daughter-in-law Sherrell Doughty. Her beloved grandchildren: Andre Williams, Shadirrah Melton, Shadir Khyree Melton, Quadere Doughty, and Quadera Doughty. Her great grandchildren: Aubrey Iyanna Walton and Ka'nai Shadir Melton. Her chosen son and daughter: Donald F. Hurts Jr. and Tiombé Hurts and their son Xander Hurts.
She is preceded in death by her son Terence Melton, her parents: Clonnie and Sarah McCoy Melton. Her second parents: Henry and Dorothy Ann Jackson. And her sibling: Greg Jackson.
She is loved and her presence will be missed.
