Janeth "Jan" Meyer, 80, of
Millsboro, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9, 2026. Jan was born in
Philadelphia, PA, to Herbert and Janeth Radue on October 7, 1945.
Jan attended Pen Ryn School in Andalusia, PA, before graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in June 1963. She then went to Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her Bachelor of Nursing. She began her career at Episcopal Hospital and ended her career at Temple University after 52 years of nursing. She was devoted to her patients, their families, and colleagues, whom she was lucky enough to call her friends. Her nursing and care for others extended far beyond the hospitals she worked in. Our mom spent most of her life caring for others, and when she retired from nursing in 2017, she continued to nurse others with the same compassion and love that she devoted to her career. Her passion to love and care for others is what made her who she was. She always knew when others, even strangers, needed the support, care, and devotion of a caring human.
Jan married the love of her life on January 18, 1969, and was proud to spend 57 wonderful years with William (Bill) F. Meyer Jr., devoted daughters Tara Meyer and Krista Szczypiorski (Kevin); grandchildren Jeffrey (Marissa), Alec, Evan, Casey, Matthew, Ryan, and Katie; and adoring great-grandsons Dalton and Colton. There was nothing our mom loved more than spending time with her grandchildren. When the kids were little, she loved digging for sand crabs by the ocean or making the best sandcastle on the beach. As they grew up, one of her favorite things to do was sit around the kitchen table and play cards! It didn't matter what card game it was; she was always willing to play and ALWAYS ready to battle whoever thought they knew the rules better than she did.
If you knew our mom, you knew she LOVED the EAGLES! She'd spend so much of her time with her grandchildren talking about the EAGLES and football stats. Her favorite story to tell, and the boys' favorite story to retell, was the Eagles Championship game against the Cowboys in 1981! The game, in her words, was "bitter cold," and she and Pop Pop sat with blocks of ice under their feet. We can still hear her saying, "I was never so cold in my life." She always had time to talk or text with the boys about football or any sport. Her love for the BIRDS knew no limits, even in their worst seasons! She was a true fan who may have been the loudest in the stands during their years of being season ticket holders and was the loudest in our house when we watched it on television. We knew growing up that "Sundays were for the BIRDS!" While her love for the BIRDS was endless, her hatred for the COWBOYS and Joe Buck was just as strong! EAGLES games will never be the same without hearing her say, "Come on boys!"
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations be made to the American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road,
Millsboro, DE 19966. Our mom was very proud to be part of the Women's Auxiliary at the post. She volunteered a lot of time to honor and support her husband, Bill, and all the veterans of Post 28. She would love nothing more than to have support in her memory go to an organization that was so important to her.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Avenue,
Philadelphia, PA 19114, from 1:00-3:00 in the afternoon.
