Barbara, of Farmington Hills, formerly of Southfield, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, February 15, 2025, at Edgewood Senior Care in Farmington Hills. She was 85 years old and reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Howard, whom she cherished immensely.
Barbara was born on February 20, 1939, in Southfield Township, Michigan, to the late Herbert and Helen (Anstett) Ostrander. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Howard, on November 3, 2018.
Barbara's life was a testament to faith, love, and generosity. Her Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her every step and filling her heart with kindness. She shared her musical gifts by playing the piano and organ for various churches and continued playing for nursing home residents even after her mother's passing, bringing comfort and joy to those around her.
A gifted crafter, Barbara's hands were never idle. She was a master of sewing, knitting, crocheting, and needlework, and she poured love into every piece she created. Her handmade gifts were treasured by family and friends, especially at Christmas and during life's special milestones. Every holiday season, her family eagerly anticipated selecting a new hat from the beautiful collection she had made throughout the year.
Barbara dedicated over 31 years to the City of Southfield, working as an administrative professional in the Planning Department office. Her sharp mind and unwavering dedication earned her the affectionate nickname "Old Faithful" from her boss-always ensuring things ran smoothly with her keen insight and unwavering work ethic.
Barbara and Howard shared a love for adventure, traveling across the U.S. in their motorhome, with Alaska holding a special place in their hearts. Winters were spent in Florida, where they enjoyed warm sunshine and new experiences.
Barbara adored her four grandchildren and took immense joy in being a loving and devoted grandmother. She also had a deep affection for her "kitties" over the years, always ensuring they were well cared for and loved. Her warmth, creativity, and unwavering faith left a lasting imprint on all who knew her. Though she will be dearly missed, her legacy of love, faith, and generosity will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by siblings, Edward, Ralph, Richard and Herbert Ostrander, and Virginia Agar, and nieces, Carol, Lori and Chris. Surviving are devoted daughters, Paula (Andy) Lankin and Lisa (John) Tottingham; adored grandchildren, Adam (Kelly) Lankin, Andrea (Brian Weed) Lankin, Kelly (Scott) Olson and Katie White; cherished great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Samuel Olson; and many nieces and nephews to especially include Sarah (Sean) Dixon.
Family and friends may gather at Heeney-Sundquist for visitation on Thursday, February 20th (Barbara's birthday), from 3-8 pm.
Barbara's funeral ceremony is planned for Friday morning, February 21, at 10:00 am, also at Heeney-Sundquist. The Reverend Ben Tellinghuisen, of the First Baptist Church of Farmington, will preside.
Private interment will follow at Southfield Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are kindly suggested to Camp Michawana, Hastings, MI, or Gideons International.
