Barbara Joyce Sczenski, 77, a beloved longtime resident of Worley, Idaho, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Barbara was born on March 20, 1948, in Tensed, Idaho, to Albert and Elizabeth (Cole) Garrick. She grew up on the family ranch in Tensed, where she developed a deep appreciation for hard work, family, and the simple joys of country life. She attended the Sisters School in DeSmet through junior high and graduated from Plummer High School with the Class of 1966.
Following graduation, Barbara moved to California to attend beauty school, but her heart eventually led her back home to Idaho. She married Ed Crowe, and together they welcomed two children. Barbara devoted herself to raising her family with love and care. After their marriage ended, she rekindled a friendship with her high school classmate, Don Sczenski. Their friendship blossomed into a lifelong love, and they married in 1974, having 2 children together.
Barbara and Don built a beautiful life together, traveling wherever Don's construction work took them-Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado. They spent time in George, Washington, where Barbara worked for a local farmer and later waited tables in Curley, Washington. In 1992, they settled in Worley, Idaho, where they made their home for good.
That same year, the Coeur d'Alene Casino opened on Barbara's birthday and she began what would become a remarkable 32-year career there. Barbara's dedication and work ethic shone brightly; she never officially retired, despite Don's gentle encouragement to do so.
Barbara will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, and her loving spirit. She had a passion for cooking and poured her heart into every meal she prepared. She found joy in tending to her lilac bushes and could often be found sitting on her porch, enjoying the peace of the outdoors. Her family fondly recalls her trimming the willow tree with a pair of scissors, just one of many small acts that reflected her caring and meticulous nature.
She loved trips to the ocean, the excitement of gambling, and the laughter of family gatherings. A proud member of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Barbara took great pride in supporting Don throughout his years of service on the Tribal Council.
Barbara is survived by her husband Don at their home in Worley; children David Crowe, Elizabeth Sczenski, and Brian Sczenski all of Worley, Lisa (Andre) Taylor of Spokane, WA, Susan Matheson and Donald Fanning both of Worley, ID; brother Joseph Garrick of Forks, WA; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, son Edward Crowe Jr., and siblings Albert Garrick, Shirley Garrick, Alberta Stensgar, Gabe Aripa, and Roberta Garrick Juneau.
Barbara's faith was a cornerstone of her life. Rosary will be recited on November 14, 2025, at the Rose Creek Longhouse in Worley at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on November 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., also at the Rose Creek Longhouse. Barbara will be laid to rest at St. Michael's Cemetery near Worley, Idaho.
Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
