Barbara Smyth Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Messinger Mortuaries- Indian School Mortuary on Dec. 20, 2025.
Barbara Ann Smyth (Liddle), age 85, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully in her residence on December, 15, 2025 during her favorite season of the year, Christmas time. She caught a glimpse of heaven and it took her breath away.
Barbara "Bobbi", was born March 7, 1940 in Sellersville, Pennsylvania to the late Alexander Samuel Liddle and Wilma P. (Losch) Liddle.
Barbara was best known as an impressionable teacher, dedicated friend, and a loving grandma and great grandma. She devoted her career to teaching English in the Paradise Valley Unified School District for over 30 years. Her classroom was a place of encouragement and inspiration, and her guidance shaped countless students who carry her influence forward. One of her simple pleasures was her white chocolate mocha from Starbucks. For over 16 years, Sunday mornings meant meeting for coffee as a family (and friends)- sharing conversation. It was a treasured part of her week and a cherished memory for those she loved. Every night she indulged in a bowl of cherry ice cream that was generously supplied by her dear neighbors.
On May 11, 1963 Barbara married her childhood sweetheart, Ellison "Tim" Smyth, and together they shared 52 wonderful years until Tim's passing in 2015. Tim was always showering her with flowers for every occasion. She was a devoted and adored mother to her three children, Amy (Brad) Randolph, Molly (Todd) Kemp, and Matt (Lindsay) Smyth.
Barbara found her deepest joy in her family, celebrating every milestone and surrounding them with love. She treasured her seven grandchildren, Taylor (Alex) Baker, Paige (Jake) Olson, Tanner Kemp, Cole (Denali) Kemp, Hannah (Jack) Shine, Avery Smyth, and Kinsley Smyth. And cherished her nine great grandchildren that were the light of her life; Greyson, Finley, Mia, Wes, Walker, Kennedy, Henry, Benson, and Baby Girl Shine (due in April).
She is survived by her brother James (Darla) Liddle, who was always making her laugh, her sister Jane (Gary) Koser, her closest confidant and best friend, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Though she will be dearly missed, her spirit continues to shine in the lives of her family, friends, neighbors, and many students whose lives she touched.
To honor Barbara's life, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to
Usher-Syndrome (https://www.usher-syndrome.org/make-an-impact/donate.html) or Hospice of the Valley- 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014/hov.org. These two organizations hold sentimental meaning.
