Barbara Sommers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home - Osceola on Jan. 8, 2026.
Barbara Sommers, age 84, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, leaving behind a life richly lived and a legacy of love, patience, creativity, and quiet strength. Barbara was born on October 2, 1941, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Gordon Barnes and Arvilla (Lape) Barnes. From her earliest days, she possessed a gentle spirit and a steady heart, qualities that would guide her throughout her life and endear her to all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Barbara's life was defined not by grand gestures, but by the countless small acts of love she offered daily, always laughing, always comforting, and always there when someone needed her. She had an extraordinary ability to make people feel supported and believed in. She was everyone's biggest cheerleader, encouraging those around her to try, to grow, and to believe in themselves. Her quiet patience and thoughtful wisdom provided guidance during both joyful and difficult times, and her honest, caring nature made her a trusted source of advice and reassurance.

Barbara met her beloved husband, Larry Sommers, through family, and their connection quickly grew into a lifelong partnership. They were married on December 3, 1960, beginning a marriage built on devotion, teamwork, and deep love. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support for their children and grandchildren. Their bond endured for nearly 57 years, until Larry's passing on August 2, 2017, a loss Barbara carried with grace and resilience, holding his memory close to her heart.

A natural teacher, Barbara shared her knowledge and talents generously. She found great joy in sewing, knitting, crafting, and creating beautiful things with her hands. Her creativity was not just a hobby, but a way of connecting with others. She loved passing these skills on, especially to the younger generations. One of her most treasured memories was sitting down with Lizzy as a child, guiding her patiently through the art of sewing, teaching not only stitches and patterns, but also confidence, perseverance, and creativity. These moments reflected who Barbara was at her core: nurturing, attentive, and deeply invested in helping others grow.

Barbara had a special love for Wisconsin, a place that held countless happy memories for her. She truly loved living there and embraced everything about it, from the friendships she formed to the traditions she created. She was a proud member of the Jaycettes, the auxiliary organization of the Wisconsin Junior Chamber of Commerce, where she was actively involved and made lifelong friends. Whenever conversations turned to Wisconsin, Barbara would light up with excitement. She knew exactly where to go, what to do, and which cherished friends to visit. Even the bitter cold couldn't dampen her spirit, she famously enjoyed grilling outdoors in subzero temperatures on New Year's, a testament to her resilience, humor, and love of life.

Family was the center of Barbara's world. She loved spending time with her loved ones, cherishing gatherings both large and small. She took immense pride in her children and grandchildren, celebrating their accomplishments and supporting them through every stage of life. Their successes brought her deep joy, and she often spoke of how proud she was of the family she helped shape. Barbara's legacy is woven into the lives of her family, a legacy of kindness, creativity, encouragement, and unconditional love.

Barbara Sommers will be remembered as a loving mother, devoted wife, cherished grandmother, patient teacher, and faithful supporter of everyone she loved. We love you and thank you, for your laughter, your lessons, your encouragement, and your endless care. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of your family, and your love will never be forgotten.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Arvilla Barnes; her beloved husband, Larry Sommers; her son, Eric Lavern Sommers; and her brother, William (Orlue) Barnes. Though deeply missed, they are now reunited, and her family takes comfort in that peace.

She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Lorie Ann (Robert) Ullery; her grandchildren, Robert (Tikayla) Ullery III, Roxanne Ullery, Eric Sommers, Elizabeth Sommers, and Daisy Ullery her great grandchild along with her Daughter-in-law Mary Sommers. Each of them carries forward a piece of Barbara's heart and spirit, shaped by her love, guidance, and unwavering support.
