Barney Earle Caver, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the age of 84.

He was born in Prattville, Alabama on January 15, 1941, to the late Raymond H. Caver, Sr and Vera Overstreet Caver. Barney was a life-long resident of Selma, where he dedicated over 30 years to a career with South Central Bell. His commitment to excellence and integrity was revered by co-workers and the employees he supervised.

Barney served honorably in the United States Army and was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. He was a member of the 620th Engineer Company/Field Maintenance serving as a mechanic. He treasured the life-long friendships he formed while serving his country and was described as a true friend, “the first to introduce himself” and “always making others feel welcome”.

Throughout his life, Barney was known to display good-natured humor, combined with strong convictions and values. The contrast of these characteristics endeared him to everyone he encountered, earning respect, admiration, and often a chuckle. Barney also lived a life marked by faithful service and deep love for his family, church, and community. He was unashamed of his faith in Christ and enjoyed many years in ministry serving as a deacon, a Gideon, a Sunday School teacher, and in numerous other leadership roles. His legacy as a Christ follower can be summed up by his favorite bible verse; “He must become greater; I must become less” John 3:30.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond H. Caver Jr., Donald H. (Joyce) Caver, Sr ; four sisters, Virginia Belle Thompson, Barbara Ann Shewmake, Shelby Jean Caver, and Valerie Wynell Caver.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Lorene Caver; son, Alan (Sonya) Caver, two daughters; Charlene Caver Abbott (Benji) and Darlene Caver Lawley; five grandchildren, Tyler Caver, Chay Longcrier, Elijah Caver, Madeline Caver Hitt, and Seth Caver; and three great-grandchildren, Jude Caver, Eliana Hitt, and Luke Caver; one brother, Robert Caver (Linda); three sisters, Chickie Workman, Golda Reed (Bob Ed), and Sue Caver. He is also survived by a host of extended family members, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Pastor Randy DeBrabant officiating. Interment will follow at Pineview Memory Gardens in Valley Grande. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for visitation, beginning at 11:00 a.m., prior to the service. The funeral service will be live streamed on Lawrence's Facebook page here.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Caver, Seth Caver, Trent Reed, Cody McCurdy, Jimmy Friday and Gary Maluda. Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert Caver, Ken Caver, Jonathon Hitt, Elijah Caver, Jessie Harris, Bob Ed Reed, Cecil Lagrone, Larry Palmer, Jimmy Stockman and Keith Dixon.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Baptist Hospice and Physicians Choice Dialysis Center for their loving care.
