Barry Fishbein passed away on February 2, 2026, at the age of 87, just three days before his 88th birthday, following a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. While a fall on January 12th brought him to Holy Redeemer Hospital, it was the subsequent discovery of a metastatic mass that began his final journey. Though his memory faded in those last weeks, his kind spirit never did.
A Life of Love and Resilience
Both profound joy and deep sorrow marked Barry’s life. The birth of his son, Dana, was a highlight of his life. Tragically, Dana was born with a heart defect, and despite Barry’s devoted care, Dana passed away as a teenager following heart surgery. This loss left a lasting mark on Barry, yet he continued to move through the world with a gentle heart.
Barry often reflected on the milestones he missed—the wife, the children, and the grandchildren that many take for granted. However, he found his own way to connect with the world, leaving an impression on everyone he met.
A "Quirky" and Sweet Spirit
Barry was a true "people person"—a fun, loving, and quirky gentleman who never argued with his sister. He was a pioneer in his own right regarding health; he gave up red meat over 30 years ago, long before it was trendy, and experimented with raw foods and vegetarianism. However, his discipline always stopped at the dessert table. He had an unshakeable love for sweets, specifically chocolate, Tastykakes, and any rich dessert he could find.
"Bingo Barry"
In his final years at the Lafayette Redeemer nursing facility, Barry became a favorite among the staff. At 6’2”, he was the tallest resident there, but he was known more for his personality than his stature. Despite his short-term memory loss, he found great joy in Bingo. He became so enthusiastic about the game that the facility’s staff affectionately renamed the activity "Bingo Barry."
His Final Days
The transition from his initial fall to his passing took only three weeks. In his final hours, surrounded by the quiet hum of the facility and the presence of his family, Barry’s breathing became calm. He passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness. While the heartbreak of his loss is heavy, his family finds comfort in the many wonderful memories of a brother who was truly one of a kind.
