Barry McPhee Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by A.W. Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax on Jan. 10, 2026.
Barry E. McPhee, 62, of Montpelier, Vermont, passed away on December 15, 2025, at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, Vermont, following a short battle with cancer. He left us peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

He was a 1981 graduate of Roxbury Latin High School in Boston, and went on to receive a B.S. from Boston University, and an M.S. from the University of Vermont. Barry was a passionate advocate for the environment and engaged in multiple volunteer and leadership positions over the years. He was always up for outdoor activities, such as body surfing at Hampton Beach, hiking the Green Mountains, biking solo or with friends, canoeing, walking his dog while working out in Montpelier's Hubbard Park, or throwing a frisbee with friends.

He will be remembered for his humor, his appreciation of music and literature, and his deep love for his family and friends. Barry's idea of a perfect day was taking a long bike ride on a crisp autumn day, followed by a simple meal that absolutely did not include any tomatoes or asparagus, and finally winding down with a beer on his back deck with loved ones.

He is survived by his wife Sarah McGinnis, daughter Susannah McPhee, grandson Cameron Johnson, his mother Carole Cody, brother Christopher McPhee, sister Maryellen Frawley, and a large and loving group of extended family and friends.

A celebration of life will be planned for the springtime.
