Barry Nelson, 85, of
Woodstock, GA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Barry is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Patricia Nelson (née Meggs), and his devoted sons, Lance (Jessica) of Cary, NC, and Spencer (Rebecca) of Roswell, GA. Affectionately known as Bear, he was the proud and loving grandfather to Carter (23), Luke (22), Ben (19), and Allie (17), each of whom brought him immense joy.
Born on November 18, 1940, in
Shreveport, Louisiana, Bear was the son of the late Carl and Gwen Nelson and the younger brother of the late Jan Nelson (Sandra), whom he deeply admired. He graduated from Centenary College with a degree in Accounting. During his college years, Bear was an enthusiastic member of the college's men's singing choir, which led to a memorable summer performing in New York City alongside the Rockettes-an experience he cherished throughout his life.
Bear began his professional career with Purina Mills as a controller, a role that took him to Wichita, Kansas. It was there he met the love of his life, Pat. They married on June 18, 1968, and began a beautiful journey together. In 1971, they welcomed their first son, Lance, followed by Spencer in 1973.
The family established roots in
Germantown, TN, where Bear continued his career with Purina. He loved being a hands-on dad - shepherding his boys and seeing them grow into kind, hardworking young men. They recall a childhood filled with fun, sports, family vacations, and unwavering love from him - unconditional and full of grace. In the early 1990s, he and Pat left Germantown and settled down in
Macon, GA, where Bear completed his tenure with Purina. After that, he spent several professionally fulfilling years as a controller for LH Thomson. In retirement, Bear and Pat found joy in their new home in
Buford, GA. There, they shared wonderful times with dear friends and neighbors.
Bear treasured his family above all. He delighted in long, laughter-filled weekends with Lance and Spencer and their families-sharing meals, telling stories, and making new memories. Bear was a generous man who found joy in treating his family to special outings and vacations, always putting their happiness first.
Bear's legacy is one of kindness, devotion, and deep love. He was an honorable man of strength and courage and he had the warmest smile and joyful laugh. He loved Jesus and lived his faith with humility and grace. Though he will be missed dearly, his loved ones find peace in knowing he is now at home with his Savior.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Holbrook Woodstock Inspired Living for their compassionate care of Barry and Pat over the past few years and to Family Hospice for their care of Barry the past few months.
The immediate family has gathered privately to celebrate his life and the love he so freely gave.
