Barry Sumner

ONSET - Barry Sumner, lovingly known as "Capt. Barry," a proud Marine, trailblazing EMT, devoted father, and fierce advocate for the handicapped, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the age of 77, surrounded by his family. Barry's life was a testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering love for adventure and the outdoors.
Born on January 8, 1947, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to the late Betsey F. (Smith) Sumner and William O. Sumner, Barry faced life's challenges with courage. After losing his right hand in an industrial accident, he made history as the first one-handed registered emergency medical technician in the U.S. Whether responding to emergencies, teaching CPR, or serving as a Coast Guard-certified captain, Barry inspired many with his abilities and determination.
Barry's love for the ocean defined much of his life. As the captain of the Shell Point and the Sea King II, he ran fishing charters that shared his passion for the sea. In the 1990s, after complications from back surgery left him a paraplegic, Barry continued to prove his skills and determination, even building a Yankee tender by hand. As he continued to face challenges, he deepened his advocacy for the handicapped, showing those around him the meaning of resilience.
Barry cherished all of the personal care attendants (PCAs) who worked with him over the years and deeply appreciated all they did for him. He also loved his cabin in Maine, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and simply being close to nature.
He is survived by his children, Jesse Sumner and Laura Sumner; his grandchildren, Justin Sumner and his wife Cassandra, Alexis Molina, Julian Molina, and Jillian Sumner; many great-grandchildren; nieces; and one nephew. He was predeceased by his siblings, William W. Sumner, Charles (Chuck) Sumner, and Barbara Sumner, and by his nephew, Dennis Sumner.
Visitation hours to honor Barry's life will be held on what would have been his 78th birthday, Wednesday, January 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Chapman Funerals & Cremations - Wareham, 2599 Cranberry Hwy (Route 28), Wareham, MA 02571. A private burial will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
