Beatrice Scully Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dooley Colonial Home - Westfield on Mar. 31, 2026.
Beatrice G. Scully, 96, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains.

Born in Westfield, New Jersey to Joseph and Mary Grogan, Bea was a lifelong resident of Westfield. Bea graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1946 and began working at the Westfield Federal Savings and Loan. Bea met another lifelong resident of Westfield, Robert L. Scully. They were married on Valentine's day,1953 and settled in Westfield to raise their family. Together they built a loving and close knit family grounded in faith, compassion and mutual respect.

While raising her young daughters and attending Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, Bea served as Rosary Altar Society President, was a member of the National Council of Catholic Women, and served as Assistant Girl Scout leader and Coordinator of Parish Girl Scouting. Later she was active in the Westfield PTA and WHS Music Boosters.

Bea returned to the work force in 1971 and was employed by the Union County Educational Services Commission for 23 years until her retirement in 1994. She began working there as an administrative assistant when Westlake School was first established. At that time, the school was located in the classrooms of the Presbyterian Church in Westfield. As the commission grew, Bea moved on to serve in various roles in the central administrative office and ultimately as Assistant Board Secretary.

Bea was loyal to her family and faith. She was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scotch Plains. She was a member of the Rosary Altar Society; served as a member of the Bereavement Ministry; and was an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist for many years, serving both on the altar at mass, and by bringing communion to the homebound and to those residing in nursing homes.

Bea was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert L. Scully and her sister Marie Burns and a brother Joseph, Jr.

Bea was a cherished and loving mother to her three daughters, Julia Speck (Brian) of New Providence, Anne Smeaton (James) of Greer, SC and Beatrice Lisa McNally (Stephen) of Scotch Plains.

She was a loving grandmother to her eight grandchildren, Abigail Speck Folcik (Thomas), Brad Speck (Caitlin), J. Robert Smeaton, Jr. (Ashley), Daniel Smeaton (Morgan), Kevin Smeaton (Grace), Victoria McNally Webb (Andrew), David McNally, John McNally (Jacqueline); and Gi Gi to eight great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great pride and brought her endless joy.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield NJ on Saturday, April 4, 2026 from 3pm to 6pm.

A mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Monday, April 6, 2026 at Immaculate Heart of Mary RC Church, 1600 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

The Scully family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living in Westfield and to the staff and volunteers at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains for their loving care and support during Bea's final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bea's memory to the food pantry at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1500 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076 or to Center for Hope Hospice, 1900 Raritan Road, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
