Belem Hernandez Obituary Belem Oviedo Hernandez, 79, of Milford, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her large and devoted family, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in the excellent care of Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital, in
Warsaw, Indiana. Today, our family lost a true warrior-a beloved mother, grandmother, and best friend. She was a woman of incredible strength who loved us deeply and unconditionally. Her heart overflowed with the love of a devoted mother, a faithful wife, and a joyfully doting grandmother.
Belem was born on July 19, 1945, in La Mielera San Pablo de Tranquitas, Municipio de Galeana, Nuevo León, Mexico to Rafael Oviedo Luna and Genoveba Alejandro Lopez. Raised in a large family, she was one of 11 children. She met her future husband at a school dance around the age of 15. On October 24, 1964, at the young age of 19 she married her best friend and only love, Nicolas Hernandez. Early in their marriage, they moved around and worked as seasonal migrant farm workers. At one time they picked strawberries in Florida as well as picked tomatoes, green beans, apples, and blueberries here in Indiana. They made their final move to Milford, Indiana in October of 1968. Together they raised two sons and seven daughters throughout their 57 years of marriage. Sadly, she said good-bye to our Dad on July 20, 2022, and missed him dearly.
She was of Catholic faith and attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church when she was able. Milford Chapel held a special place in her heart, for many years her children and grandchildren attended Vacation Bible School and Wednesday night bible study. She was full of life, laughter, and gratitude, always giving more than she received. Our very own Energizer Bunny-unstoppable, always moving, always giving. She found joy in serving others, especially through her love of cooking. Our mom was always in the kitchen, and she poured her heart into every meal she made. One never left a visit to her house without being fed. She enjoyed chicken figurines, roosters and her fresh eggs from her chickens. She had a habit of "transplanting" flowers from a stranger's yard to hers and loved all of her Mother's Day flowers we brought her every year. She liked to walk around outside, checking her garden and simply sitting in a chair under the shade outside enjoying the weather and a good conversation. We had a very great mom, strict at times but she loved us no matter what we did good, bad, or naughty.
Her love knew no limits. She had a heart big enough for everyone, and she gave it freely. We will miss her deeply, but her love and spirit will live on in all of us. She leaves behind two sons, Nicolas (Idalia) Hernandez, Jr. (Milford, Indiana); Raf Hernandez (Goshen, Indiana) and seven daughters, Rosita (Saul) Pedroza (Milford, Indiana); Mary Lou Hernandez (Gresham, Oregon); Anita Hernandez (
Warsaw, Indiana); Maria (Reyes) Tienda (Milford, Indiana); Sarita Hernandez (Milford, Indiana); Mary Ellen (David) Jackson (Milford, Indiana); and Violeta Herrera (Milford, Indiana). Also surviving are three granddaughters, Gabriella, Marisa, Daleysa; twenty grandsons, Saulito, Daniel, Cris, Rodrigo Ronueldo, Arnold, Rey, Oscar, Alex, Lorenzo, Adam, Marcos, Rafailito Jr., Angel, Mateo, Panchito, Vicente, Andres, Yoni and Savino;; and six great-grandchildren, Xavier, Daniel, Jr., Rio, Kataleya, Eliseo and Adriel. As well as two brothers, Armando Oviedo (Mexico); Zeferino Oviedo (Syracuse, IN); and three sisters: Maria Ramirez (Mexico); Matilde Delgado (Ligonier, IN); Edelmira Torres (Wawaka, IN); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, our beloved Dad, Nicolas Hernandez, three brothers, Enrique and Modesto Ramirez, Delfino Oviedo Alejandro, and two sisters, Dora Olvera and Amalia Oviedo Alejandro.
