It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Belinda Sue Chafins, age 61, on December 26, 2024. Belinda was a radiant soul whose love for her family, friends, and life was unparalleled. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on July 5, 1963, to Reba (Wolford) Lewis and the late Clinton Lewis, Belinda's life began with deep family roots and love. She spent her earliest years on the Norfolk Naval Base before her family moved to Lincoln Park, Michigan, where she would grow up and remain for the rest of her life.
Belinda was the beloved sister of Pamela (Donald) Sharpe and the late Kathleen Lewis. The bond between the Lewis sisters was unbreakable, and it was during these formative years that Belinda learned the true value of family. Together, the sisters shared countless memories, from childhood adventures to lifelong support. Their close-knit relationship laid the foundation for Belinda's deep sense of loyalty, love, and devotion. Whether through laughter, shared secrets, or the comforting presence of one another during difficult times, the love between Belinda and her sisters was a source of strength and guidance throughout her life. It was this unwavering family bond that shaped Belinda into the compassionate, caring, and selfless woman she became, always putting family first and cherishing the connections that mattered most.
On the streets of Lincoln Park, where the Lewis and Chafins families lived side by side, Belinda met the love of her life, William (Bill) Chafins. It was a neighborhood where childhood friendships blossomed into lifelong bonds, and for Belinda and Bill, their connection was nothing short of fate. From the innocent days of playing together until the streetlights came on to the shared moments of growing up, their relationship grew stronger with each passing year. They were more than just neighbors-they were best friends who stood by each other through the highs and lows of life. As children, they knew each other's secrets, dreams, and fears, and as adults, they shared a deep and unwavering love. Their families became intertwined, and on October 19, 1985, Belinda and Bill were married, marking the beginning of a 39-year journey filled with love, laughter, and mutual devotion. Through every season of life-whether they were celebrating joys or weathering challenges-they were inseparable. Bill's steadfast devotion to Belinda remained constant, and she was, and always will be, "his girl." Their love story was a testament to the power of friendship and the enduring beauty of a partnership built on trust, care, and shared years.
As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Belinda's world revolved around her family. She was the loving mother of Melissa Chafins and Randy Chafins, and the proud grandmother of Emma Dishon. Belinda's heart overflowed with joy as she cared for her loved ones, finding fulfillment not only in life's major milestones but also in the quiet, everyday moments that filled her home with warmth and love. She cherished her role as a mother, deeply valuing the time spent nurturing her children and creating a safe and comfortable home. Her family was the center of her world, and her love for them was boundless.
Belinda is also survived by a large extended family, including her dear sister-in-law Debi (Howard) Humphreys, Karen (Gary) Brown, Michael Chafins, and Brian (Nancy) Chafins; her many nieces and nephews, including Thomas (Sarah) Woodward, Anthony (Krystal) Brown, Alicia Brees, Joshua Chafins, Christopher Chafins, Paige (Destiny) Brekowski, and Chelsea Brown.
A graduate of Lincoln Park High School in 1982 and growing up in Lincoln Park, she was a friend of many. Belinda was a devoted member of the Lincoln Park Eagles, where her infectious energy and warmth made her a beloved presence.
Belinda's smile could light up any room. She had a gift for making everyone she met feel like an instant friend. Her kindness, genuine interest in others, and ability to make everyone feel welcome were hallmarks of her character. Whether it was through her warm embrace or her open heart, Belinda never met a stranger. People were drawn to her not just for her beauty, which radiated from the inside out, but for her vibrant spirit and positive energy.
Belinda's zest for life was contagious. She loved to dance, and no event-big or small-was complete without her lively presence. She was the life of the party, always ready to bring joy and laughter to those around her. Her natural ability to make others feel seen and loved made her a great friend, and she always thought of others before herself.
Belinda will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and joy will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She leaves behind a world that is brighter for having had her in it, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025 1:00 - 8:00 PM. A service hosted by the Lincoln Park Eagles will begin at 7:30 PM.
