Wendell was born on December 12, 1940 in Graceville, Florida, to William Erskine Bruner and Eva Rebecca Watford Bruner. He was raised in Panama City, Florida, where he graduated from Bay High School. He was a veteran of both the United States Navy and United States Air Force. In the Navy, he was stationed in the VAH-3 and VAH-9 squadrons aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60), as well as in Sanford and Jacksonville, Florida. After re-enlisting in the United States Air Force, he then served in Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; and finally returned to his hometown of Panama City, Florida. Wendell liked racing Corvettes, riding Harley Davidsons, and watching NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt. He loved to travel and see America, but always found a way to return to his beloved hometown.

The youngest of four siblings, he is preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Bruner, and his sisters, Ginny O'Neal and Margaret Runnels.

He is survived by his son, Kevin Andrew Bruner, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
