What a time it was. I met Benny (what his mom called him) in 1982 while attending Bay View High School. He was a great encourager and a very kind, loving person. We had many travels together, musical and otherwise, some to the great white north, where he always threatened to buy a place next to mine on Mueller Lake. Benny actually played many different instruments quite well and wrote his own music...he was a band director of the school variety, too. He was always very serious about his music but also had a wicked sense of humor. The last time we spoke he was tracking down some music by Chick Corea, one of his faves. Thanks for everything you taught me and for all the times your were there for me...and for the great music. Love ya still, Tami Retzlaff Malina

I was always nervous to come in for our private violin lessons. I almost never practiced, which Mr. Leon mentioned multiple times I should work on. But, I´ll never forget Mr. Leon´s antics before our annual performances with the orchestra. He would always start out with jokes, and to finish, would pull out the classic Alvin and the chipmunks song at the winter performance. Truly shocked and saddened to hear about his passing, but will always remember the passion and love Mr. Leon had for me and the rest of the students at Wisconsin Hills Middle School.

(Thank you for whoever wrote the wonderful obituary and sharing other parts of Mr Leon's life.)
Orchestra was a refuge from the academic and social pressures of school for many of Mr Leon's students. He inspired thousands of us throughout his career with his love of music. He taught us how to work hard and work together as a team. Although he is gone too soon and will be missed dearly, he has left a tremendous legacy that will be passed on to next generations!

I was an orchestra student of Mr. Leon in the early 90s. I loved being in his class, and have many fond memories of rehearsals and concerts, especially one where he belly flopped on the ground as part of the act. His passion for music and teaching youth was so evident. He will be missed.

I met ben and only knew him for a short while but he was a light. He always had a smile on his face and I know me and my co-workers will miss his wittiness and good humor! A sad day for those here on earth, and a celebration up in heaven I am sure, they got one of their angles back.

Ben and I went to South Division together. We quickly became very good friends. Everything I remember about him was true to his naturally good soul. I remember sitting next to him listening to him practice his piano skills. Sitting there, next to Ben, made me smile. Ben gave me my first "diamond ring." I still wear it to this day. There has always been a special place in my heart for Ben. He truly was a gentle giant. He will be missed by those who knew him.
