Obituary of Benjamin Edwin Loy
Benjamin Edwin Loy, 72, discovered "the Ultimate Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything" on Sunday, August 20, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents Arlie and Virginia Loy; and brothers, MGySgt Ron and James Loy. Left to cherish his memory, and to see if he can clue them in on all the curiosities of life, are his loving wife of 49 years, Terry Loy; daughter Deena Loy Bugel and her husband, John; brothers Arlie Loy, Vince Loy and his wife, Velma; grandchildren Levi, Emily, Elijah, Theodore, and a host of many other beloved family and friends.
Ben grew up in Greensboro, NC. He spent his youth getting into trouble with his brothers and running around the family homestead. He fondly remembered a trip to Cherokee, NC and Grandfather Mountain, with his parents and brothers. He joined the Coast Guard in 1971, and was stationed in Opa-Locka, FL. When asked what his bravest moment in life had been, he reminisced about the search and rescue mission of the Eastern Airlines L-1011 Tristar plane crash in the Everglades, on December 29, 1972. He helped rescue 75 survivors that night. In the movie about the Flight 401 disaster, he was deeply upset that he was portrayed as an overweight Corpsman wearing glasses. He convinced Terry to marry him in June 1974, and they honeymooned at an amusement park, where he quickly learned his beloved was not fond of heights. After spending time in Miami, New Orleans, and Durham, they moved to Texas where Ben enrolled in Pharmacy school at the University of Houston. There he met some of his most treasured friends, whose honesty he particularly valued. After graduation from school and work as a pharmacist, Ben had a lasting career at PDX Inc, where he was held in high regard. Ben found inspiration in the people he worked with and in his son-in-law, John. Ben's proudest achievement was his only daughter, Deena. He also treasured being a Grandfather - a role he took extremely seriously! Going to Grandpa's house meant Dr Pepper floats, waffles, and French toast; indulgences that he would always say yes to. Ben will be remembered for his you-can-hear-it-from-outer-space sneeze, and for his over twenty-five-year-old catch phrase when asked how he was, "pretty good for an old man".
A memorial service will be held for Benjamin at 10:30 am, on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Redeemer Church, 18218 Hwy 6, Manvel, Texas 77578, with Pastor David Goran officiating.
