Benjamin A. McComas, age 27, formerly of
Avon Lake, Ohio passed away Sunday, December 14, 2025. He was born January 25, 1998-physically in Chita, Russia-but lovingly in the hearts of his parents Don and Sherri (nee Neiding) McComas.
Adopted at eight months old, Ben celebrated his first birthday with his parents in Bay Village, Ohio and later moved to Avon Lake. He was a student at St. Joseph Catholic School and a 2016 graduate of Avon Lake High School. Beginning in grade school and then later in high school, Ben relished playing hockey, which provided freedom to be on the ice and skate. He also enjoyed Scouting, advancing through the ranks of Cub Scout, Webelo, Boy Scout and and finally achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout. The highlight of Ben's time in scouting was his trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Ben was gifted with boundless creativity which he applied to photography, writing, drawing (including designing his own Christmas cards), and musical composition. But his true passion-and where his spirit soared and his talents shined the brightest-was performing and attending musical and theater events. He loved participating in the ALHS marching band and concert band, choral programs, stage productions, and, outside of school, the Oberlin Choristers. He also expressed his love of singing and acting through community theater, performing at Huntington Playhouse, True North Cultural Arts, and Cedar Point-as well as singing the National Anthem for the Cleveland Crushers and the Cleveland Monsters.Ben attended classes at Lorain County Community College while in high school and following graduation. As he emerged into adulthood, his free-spirited nature blossomed and Ben courageously explored many paths, often "taking the road less traveled" as he pursued his passions and did his own thing his own way. He proudly worked for Studio West 117 in Lakewood where he both enjoyed and contributed to the support of the LGBTQ+ community. "Benjie" found models for his photography projects and developed lasting friendships through his connections and active engagement with the LGBTQ+ and drag queen community-his extended family. He was a fierce advocate for the rights of others, especially Cleveland's unsheltered community. Above all, Ben is a beloved son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, and will be deeply and forever missed.
Ben is survived by his loving parents Don and Sherri McComas; doting grandparents Sue Neiding, and Tom and Maralyn Neiding; dear aunts and uncles Penny and Dave Harrold, Dan Neiding, and Sandi Neiding; and cherished cousins Marissa Harrold and Kristen Neiding. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Norma and Donald McComas, John Bender, and uncle Eugene McComas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Ben's honor be made to LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland.
