Benjiman Anderson Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Apr. 18 to Apr. 19, 2010.
ANDERSON, Benjiman William "Ben," passed away peacefully on March 31, 2010, just weeks shy of his 90th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Austin Anderson; his children, Bruce (Carol Sue), Carol Ann Norman (Bobby), Keith (Martha); grandchildren (chronologically), Eric, Nicole, Todd, Julie, Lisa, Austin and Will; three great- grandchildren, Rachel, Victoria and Madeline; his sisters, Louise Berger and Mildred Crostic. He was the eldest of four children. He was preceded in death by his most beloved grandmother, Clara Cox Martin; his parents, Clyde Sr. and Lessie Martin Anderson; and his brother, Clyde Jr. A lifetime Chesterfield County resident, Ben was also a lifetime member of Providence United Methodist Church. Having joined in June 1930, at his passing, he held the longest membership in the church. He was a member of the Providence Retired Club. Ben graduated from Manchester High School in 1938, and went to work for C&P Telephone Company. At 21 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, Signal Battalion, just one month after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and stepped off a boat onto Hawaii on his 22nd birthday. He later served in the Philippines. After the war, he returned to the Telephone Company, and retired after 42 years, joining Local 2201 Retired Members Club. Not one to just sit around, he worked at his neighborhood Ukrop's after retirement. Ben was involved with scouting and volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 862 for many years. He also volunteered at McGuire Veterans Hospital, doing his best to honor and support our injured war heroes however he could. He liked to visit with people and always visited shut-ins and friends until he stopped driving at 85 years old. He was a good friend to many, maintaining relationships with his old Army buddies until the end. He was an avid traveler and camper, and he was able to vacation in all 50 states, Europe, Canada and Panama. His favorite vacation place of all was Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Reservoir), particularly Eastland Creek, where his family still enjoys vacationing today. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and really enjoyed his trips with friends. He was a past member of American Legion Posts 186 & 354. A celebration of Ben's life will be held on April 20 at 3 p.m., in Providence United Methodist Church, 901 S. Providence Rd., Richmond, Va. 23236. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence United Methodist Church and marked in his memory.

It's been over a year now, but it feels like only a few weeks. When I go fishing I use one of Ben's reels he gave me. This way I still have him in the boat with me, we're still fishing together. I think of him often,I cherish his memories and keep him close to me, always.

Keith, Bruce, Carol Ann, Mrs. Anderson, and family,
My deepest sympathy in your loss. Mr. Anderson will be forever in my memories as offering a smile, wave, and kind word whenever I visited Anderson Machine or just running by with Keith. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. For certain Mr. Anderson has been healed and delivered by the faith he has placed in our Lord Jesus Christ. Praise God for men of such endurance and faith. Praise God for His reward. Praise God for your loved one's life. Celebrate his life and celebrate Jesus' victory in it all.

In this one picture alone, Papa Ben has a sincere smile as well as a smile in his eyes which shows how happy, content and loved as well as loving. The face says a lot about a person.

I know just how much ya'll loved him and one can tell how much he adored all of you. He was as lucky to have had you as you were to have had him. He will always watch over each and every one of you until the day you will see him again. Now he will watch over you and again see the others he lost some time ago once again.

Although I cannot join you tomorrow, Tuesday, I will be thinking and praying for of each and every one of you, even those who I have never met.

Bless you all and may God console you as best he can.

Dearest Virginia and all of your family. I want to express my deepest sympathy in the passing of Ben. We all will miss him dearly. You and Ben were like a second set of parents to me. I have so many wonderful memories, especially our times at Buggs Island. Ben was a very thoughtful and kind man. God give you strength throughout this time and know that you'll be holding hands once again in Heaven.
Dearest Carol: You have certainly been a devoted daughter and the bestest friend anyone could ever hope to have. God bless you all. I love you, Linda

I loved going to Bugs Island...that's where I first learned to water ski. Ben was a wonderful man who always put a smile on my face. He had the best sense of humor and a personality that I will always carry with me!

My Papa Ben is one of the greatest blessings in my life. He is in every special memory I have growing up from Birthdays, Christmas mornings, Proms, Graduations, & Vacations. He has been such a wonderful constant in my life. I've been so lucky to have known my grandfather as a young child, as a teenager, & now as a young woman. Papa Ben was so special & signifcant to me, I'm fortunate to have been so close to him. I have admired & been inspired by my Papa. He has become a friend and man that I loved & trusted. I am thankful that I was one of the lucky ones to be his granddaughter. I love you, Papa Ben. I miss you so much already but my memories of our time together will carry me through a lifetime.

Uncle Ben had a magical way about him that brought smiles to the faces of all who knew him. His famous "Give me a hug" greeting echos in my mind and makes me smile.
I remember our early years as kids and it was always fun to go to Aunt Virginia and Uncle Ben's and play in the playroom that they had built in the back part of the garage with Bruce, Carol Ann and Keith. Great times! I am thankful that Uncle Ben and Aunt Virginia introduced my parents to Buggs Island. The legacy of that moment lives on today as we all thoroughly enjoy the lake.
I am lucky to have had him as my Uncle and just know that he greeted all in the heavens with a great big hug.
We will remember the love you gave to all of us and treasure your memory til we all meet again.

With our love and deepest sympathy,
Dianne, Craig and family

I feel that a part of our family is missing with Ben now in Heaven! Since my husband & I moved to Florida 33 years ago, each time I visited VA after he passed, Ben & Virginia were always taking me to visit various friends. How thoughtful! That was Ben, always thinking of others. I'll miss you, my friend.
