Obituary of Bernard Boodoo
Bernard Boodoo, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at his Florida home. Bernard was born on the island of Trinidad, in a village called Cunaripo to Rosa and Ratnalo, on August 21st, 1943. He was the brother of the late Basso, Nathaniel, Albert, Francis, and Rajkumar.
Bernard was united in holy matrimony to Deomattie Maharaj in May of 1965. Always industrious and with Deomattie's support, they became pillars of the community in Guaico, Sangre Grande establishing a grocery, bar, and roti shop. They were well-known for their generosity, willingness to always lend a helping hand, and support to anyone who needed.
Bernard and Deomattie migrated to the United States in the mid 90's, where they briefly lived in New York and ultimately settled in Tampa, Florida. Being as resourceful as they were, they re-established themselves, connected with the community, and began a few small business initiatives. Bernard lived a full life through simple pleasures; tending to flowers and plants in the garden, protecting the animals that found shelter in his backyard, and educating his grandchildren in Trinidadian culture and religious practices. He fancied himself a handyman and Jack-of-all-trades, and he was a prolific chauffer for many family members no matter if it was last minute or out of the way. He would creatively avoid traffic lights and intersections, creating short cuts to get to a destination.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Deomattie; three daughters, Satie, Guytri, and Geeta; two sons, Mano and Akey; three sons-in-law, Timmy Soogrim, Narry Teemal, and Daniel Piper; three granddaughters, Kelly, Britney, and Madison; four grandsons, Robert, Richard, Vishal, and Matthew; two great granddaughters, Rebecca and Rosalie; and a great many cherished and loved extended family.
Friends and family will gather on June 5 at the Florida Mortuary & Cremation Services from 9 a.m. through 12 p.m. to honor his life.
