Bernard (Bud) H. Labov, 93, of Elkins Park, PA, passed away on the early morning of Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Abramson Center, North Wales after a valiant fight with Parkinson's Disease. He was born October 2, 1925 in Philadelphia to Morris and Rose Labov. He was married to Arlene A. Frank who predeceased him. Surviving are his daughter Marci Kenny (Daniel), sons Steven Labov (Lisa), Dr. Joel Greenhill (Janet); granddaughters, Jaime, Jaclyn, Shannon and Paula; niece, Roberta; nephew, Kenny. Predeceasing Bernard was his sister, Florence. Wanting to serve his Country, Bud joined the armed forces (US Navy) at the age of 17 with his father's consent. He served aboard the destroyer USS Winslow at war-time. He was most proud of his involvement in defense of his Country when he was assigned to security forces off the coast of NJ on May 14, 1945. During this assignment he was involved in the capture of a German submarine and its crew who were subsequently transferred to Fort Dupont, DE. Subsequent to the Navy, Bud joined the Philadelphia Police Department following in his father Morris' footsteps. After twelve years of service he was critically injured in the line of duty in an explosion necessitating his retirement as a police officer. While on the police department he was a member of the association of Jewish police officers 'Shomrim of Philadelphia' with his father. He served in patrol as well as driver and security to Sergeant and then Captain Frank Rizzo. Bernard was the second of three generations of law enforcement (Morris, Bernard, Steven; 1914 through 2018). During his military service he was awarded several medals including the World War II Victory Medal followed by an honorable discharge. During his law enforcement service, he was awarded the Purple Heart from the American Police Hall of Fame for his critical injury on-duty necessitating surgery, four months of hospitalization followed by an extensive recovery. Following the police department, he worked for a prominent Philadelphia private detective agency as a detective rising over the years to the position of executive vice president of the 150-officer firm. He was an active member in excess of 50 years of both the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Police. In his retirement he volunteered for Abington Memorial Hospital while taking care of his ill wife Arlene. Contributions in his memory may be made to: The Chapel of Four Chaplains, Philadelphia Navy Yard, 1201 Constitution Avenue, #649, Philadelphia, PA 19112.
