Bernard Wappes

Bernard F. Wappes, 87, of Churubusco, passed away on March 11, 2022, at Miller's at Oak Pointe. He was born in Whitley County, on August 12, 1934, to the late Raymond and May (Zeigler) Wappes. He spent his formative years in Whitley County, graduating from Churubusco High School 1952. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army, he was with the 701st Military Police Battalion in Fort Knox, KY. Bernard was married to Catherine Couture in Ege, on July 13, 1957. She preceded him in death after 61 years of marriage on April 7, 2019. He was a bus driver and maintenance man for Smith-Green Community Schools from 1959 to 1989. Bernard and Catherine enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ. He enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball and attending events for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church and the Churubusco American Legion Post #157. Bernard is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Pearson, Mary Lou (Rheejaa) Price, and Carolyn (Rick) Roebuck; four sons, Charles Wappes, David (Lori) Wappes, Kenneth (Tanesha) Wappes, and Thomas Wappes; a sister, Marilyn (Rick) Keirn; 14 grandchildren, Dr. Ana (John) Kalbfell, Benjamin (Emily) Pearson, Theodore (James Bennett) Pearson, Scott (Sylvia) Wappes, Dakota Wappes, Hannah Wappes, Alexander (Jade) Harmeyer, Kaylon Wappes, Daniel Wappes, Carly (Clayton) Greener, Skylar Wappes, Rachel (Andrew) Ferrell, Renee (Benjamin) Feltz, and Richelle Menzie; eight great-grandchildren, Ash and Juniper Harmeyer, Jackson and Charlotte Ferrell, Josephine Feltz, Liam Pearson, Kathryn Kalbfell and Asher Greener. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Terry Wappes. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. John Bosco Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., with calling at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m.The family will also receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the Holy Rosary at 8:00 p.m. Burial taking place at Ege Catholic Cemetery, Ege.
