Bernice Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025. She was 87 years old.
Born on August 26, 1938, in Fort Worth, Texas, Bernice was the daughter of Alfred Dan and Ida Mae Butler. She received her high school education at the historic I.M. Terrell High School, where she laid the foundation for a lifetime of hard work, resilience, and dedication.
Bernice was no stranger to hard work. She held various positions throughout her life, including with Justin Boots, and was a talented seamstress whose skill and attention to detail were unmatched. Yet, her most enduring legacy was not just her work, but the love and care she poured into her family and community.
A devoted member of Greater Saint James Baptist Church for over 60 years, Bernice faithfully served on the Usher Board and contributed to numerous church activities. Her faith was unwavering and deeply rooted in everything she did.
Above all, Bernice was a family woman. She lovingly dedicated her life to raising and nurturing not only her own children and grandchildren, but countless others who were blessed by her kindness, warmth, and guidance. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her humor could light up any room. Whether she was cracking a joke, telling a story, or serving up one of her famous Sunday or holiday meals, she had a gift for making people feel loved and at home.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and all six of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory her three children: Marvin, Nita, and Patricia; her grandchildren: LaTanya (Jeremiah), LaToya (Robert), Shanice, Marquise, and Shemar; and her great-grandchildren: Kaiden, Landon, Bailee, Nadilyn, Justin, and Zayden. She is also survived by a host of other beloved relatives and friends whose lives she touched in countless ways.
Bernice Smith's life was a testament to love, laughter, and service. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
