Bert Eugene Jones

Bert Eugene Jones, 83, of Granite City, IL passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. Bert was born on June 16, 1942, in Granite City to the late Amos and Leora (Adams) Jones. At the age of 17, Bert enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed out of San Diego serving 6 ½ years of combined active and reserve duty. After an honorable discharge he stayed in California working with Pacific Bell as a cable splicer and coin operator repairman. In 1965, Bert returned to Granite City and began working for Illinois Bell Telephone Company which lead to a successful career in the telephone industry before retiring from AT&T in 1994. Bert married the love of his life in 1968 and settled in Mitchell, IL where he and Ruby would raise their family and make lifelong friends In 1972, Bert joined the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department beginning a lifetime of dedication to his community. For over 40 years, Bert served with the MVFD as a Firefighter/EMT, and in 2006 continued his service by serving as District Trustee. Bert also served as Commander of the AMVETS from 2002 to 2004. In his spare time, Bert loved spending summers with family and friends at his property on Carlyle Lake where those moments are now cherished memories. He is survived by his wife Ruby of 57 years, his daughter and son-in law, Sheri and Brian Kershaw, grandchildren, Kalyn and Kyle, a sister, Vivian Miller, nieces, Cindi, Robin and nephew David along with many extended friends that were more like family to Bert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Kevin Jones, and two brothers, Melvin and David Jones. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 8th, 2025, at Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory until time of service at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Randy Vollmar officiating. Immediately following the service, a light luncheon will be held at the Chouteau Township Hall on Thorngate Road in Granite City, starting at around 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department or the Granite City APA.
