Bert T. Thompson

1947-2025

Bert T. Thompson, 77, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

He was born November 26, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas to Elbert and Patricia (Ellis) Thompson. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Denver, Colorado, and Anaheim, California. He graduated from Pittsburg, Kansas, High School and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico.

Bert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the VFW Post 1668 and American Legion Post 359.

On June 14, 1995, Bert married Janet Louise LaForte. She preceded him in death on January 9, 2025.

He was a school counselor, history and science teacher for the St. Joseph School District for many years, then was a lab technician at Farmland Industries for 15 years. Later on he was maintenance superintendent at Holiday Inn.

Bert enjoyed flying and earned his private pilot license. He also loved restoring older vehicles and tinkering in his "shop." His interest in science included membership in the National Geographic Society.

He was a Christian.

Bert lived an adventuresome life and will be missed by all who knew him and by his dog, Max, whom he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; and his parents.

Survivors include his son, Bert Patrick Thompson; two grandchildren; and niece, Desiree Morrison.
