Bertha Marie (Ankle) Fikan, age 94 of Colby, Kansas, passed away on September 25, 2024. She was born on September 3, 1930, in Seneca, Missouri to Archibald and Gertrude (Elbert) Ankle. The Ankle family relocated from Missouri to Beardsley, KS. Bertha attended grade school in Beardsley, Forest Hill country school, high school in Atwood and Hair Academy in Dodge City. She took great pride in growing up the only sister of four brothers.
In 1947, Bertha married Robert Harrington (later divorced) and to this union two children were born, Robert Louis and Roberta Jo. Bertha married Darrel H. Fikan on December 28, 1957, and one son was born, John Frederick Fikan.
Bertha retired from being a beautician after 38 years. She was involved in quilting and teaching quilting classes. Cooking and baking for family and friends was pure joy.
Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, Arch and Gertrude Ankle; brothers, William John Ankle and David Donald Ankle; son-in-law Al Castaneda; daughter-in-law Karen Harrington; husband Darrel of 56 years and son John.
She is survived by brothers, Alvin (Monique) Ankle, Oregon and Leroy Ankle, Illinois; son Robert Harrington of Ft Collins, CO; daughter Roberta Castaneda of Billings, MT; grandchildren, Robbie (Bekah) Harrington, Fountain, CO, Amanda (John) Beersman, Greeley, CO, Rachel Varela, Queen Creek, AZ, Alec Garbutt, Colorado Springs, CO, Eric (Ashley) Garbutt, Shepherd, MT, Paul (Elizabeth) Garbutt, Billings, MT, Alicia (Jason) Siruta, Bradley (Shannon) Fikan and Jason (Kelly) Fikan all of Colby, KS; many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation is 4-6:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. The Funeral Mass is at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, with burial in Chardon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School or the HOPE Foundation and sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701. For information or condolences visit baalmannmortuary.com
