Bertie Marie Williams

Bertie "Marie" Sawyer Williams, age 95, (formerly of the Newland community of Pasquotank County, NC), died on September 8, 2025, at Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall in Norfolk, VA. Born in South Mills, NC, on May 6, 1930, to the late Minuard N. Sawyer and Bertie Albertson Sawyer, she was the widow of John Emmitt Williams.
Throughout her life, Marie embodied grace and dedication. She worked as a bookkeeper at Allied Moving and Storage where her attention to details and commitment were greatly valued. Additionally, she found joy in sharing her passion for jewelry by selling Sarah Coventry pieces, bringing a touch of elegance to those around her, obtaining many prestigious awards for her success with the jewelry sales.
Marie had a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and could often be found tending to her garden, a testament to her love of nurturing growth, and finding peace in simple pleasures. Her interests extended beyond gardening to include a fondness for jewelry, which she appreciated not only for its aesthetic appeal but for its ability to tell a story and connect people.
A devout and faithful individual, Marie was a member of the Newland United Methodist Church in her early years and later joined The Garden United Methodist Church after moving to Norfolk. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, offering her strength and solace throughout her years.
Marie is survived by five first cousins, Virginia Keaton, Mike Albertson, Chris Albertson, Gary Albertson, and Annie Laurie Whedbee; and a special cousin, Randy Keaton. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dawne Hollis-Custer officiating. The family will greet visitors immediately following the service in the funeral home lobby. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
