Bessie Delores Barzar of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 14, 2025 at the age of 89. She was born on January 19, 1936 in North Little Rock, Arkansas to Blush Jordan Sr. and Mildred (Laws) Jordan. She was baptized at an early age and was loved by all who knew her.
Bessie, known as Delores to her family and friends was preceded in death by her father Blush Jordan Sr. and mother Mildred (Laws) Jordan; sisters Dorothy Nickerson, Violet Burk, Ruth Starks, Ora Jean Richardson and brother Blush Jordan Jr. She is survived by her devoted husband Leo Barzar; brother Dillard Jordan, niece Shirley Barnes, nephew Earl Johnson (Mary Ann), and her children Adrienna Douglas, Herman Douglas (Regina), Julia Davis, Marian Medlock, Christella McCall (Andre), and Merri Douglas. Her legacy also lives on through her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved her deeply.
Bessie graduated from Jones High School in North Little Rock, Arkansas and attended Dunbar Junior College in Little Rock before moving to Houston, Texas in 1956. She graduated from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. She obtained her teacher's certification from the University of Houston to pursue her passion for education. She touched countless lives as a teacher at Turner and Longfellow elementary schools where she taught for many years.
An avid writer, especially of poetry, Bessie had a unique way of expressing her thoughts and emotions through the written word. She was also a travel enthusiast who enjoyed meeting new people.
She was a beacon of kindness, love, and gratitude. She was a nurturer at heart, proving every day that family extends far beyond DNA. Smart and funny, Bessie had an infectious laugh that could light up any room. Above all, she was a beautiful servant of God.
Bessie's celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Sugar Land Mortuary, 1818 Eldridge Rd., Sugar Land, TX 77478. Viewing:10:00-11:00. Service: 11:00. Interment will follow at Houston Memorial Gardens.
In Bessie's memory, those wishing to honor her life are encouraged to donate or volunteer at a local food pantry, women's shelter, or a charity of their choice.
