Mrs. Betty Irene Bonds, 89, passed away at her home in Jacksonville, AL on Monday, August 18, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Pops" Bonds; her father, Guy McVeigh; her mother, Ophelia McVeigh; her brothers, Johnny McVeigh, Edward McVeigh, Richard McVeigh and Harold McVeigh; and her sisters, Emma McVeigh, Doris Riley, May Thompson, and Pearl Turner. Her memory lives on through her son, Michael Griffin; her three daughters, Candy Johnson, Patty Drinkard, and Sheila Griffin; and her four grandchildren, Alexandria Griffin, Trey Drinkard, Preston Drinkard, and Jon Lucas Martin.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, August 22, 2025 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2025 at the funeral home, with Reverend Rickey Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Trey Drinkard, Preston Drinkard, Michael Bacos, Tommy Dunn, Ken Turner, and Russell Powell.
Mrs. Bonds was a devoted member of Unity Church who deeply loved her faith, her family, and a good meal. She especially enjoyed sharing meals, including buttermilk, cornbread, beans, cabbage, tomato gravy, salmon patties, and catfish; but never beef.
Throughout her life, she was many things: an Air Force photographer, a Forest Service fire lookout, an Anniston Army Depot administrator, an early adopter of computers, a Walmart sampler, and more. After a lifetime of hard work and careful saving, she treated herself to a denim blue Volkswagen Beetle, "Betty's Bug."
Known for her quick wit, easy smile, and beautiful spirit, she made the world a better place because she was in it. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in honor of her love for sitting on the porch, watching her roses bloom, and her trees grow tall.
Proverbs 31:31 "Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
