She moved from Halifax County to Wilmington, NC, at age 5, then later to Sanford, NC when a job opportunity opened for her father at Williams Belk. This led him to open Jones-Lee Furniture Company. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA for one year, then transferred to Richmond Professional Institute, where she once sang with the school orchestra at a concert.

Betty Lou had a beautiful voice and was a member of the Youth Choir and 50 Year member of the Chancel Choir at First Presbyterian Church of Sanford, NC. She was a substitute in the Handbell Choir.
She was a member of the Young Adult Sunday School Class at First Presbyterian which started in 1950 and later became known as the Dietrick Class in 1963. Betty Lou was President of the Class in 1951. She was a teacher in the children's class at one point.
She was a Life Member of the Women of the Church and chaired Circle Meetings.
Betty Lou volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Sanford Music Club. She was a member of various Bridge clubs and enjoyed card games her entire life. She also enjoyed many years with the Brick Capital Line Dancers.
She loved to travel and took many summer vacations to the beach with her family. She also took cross-country trips with friends and family.
Betty Lou was preceded in death by her father, Seabrook Jones, and her mother, Annie Belle Williams Jones, her aunt, Harriet (Aunt Hat) Williams, and her husband, Charles Stover (Dutch) Bristow, Jr.
