She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Proverbs 31:27-28

Betty Lou Lamb Hayes, widow of Luther Hayes, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, July 24, 2025, surrounded by family. She had lived in and around the Big Hill community most of her life.

Betty was born August 6, 1940 to the late Omer and Ada Parker Lamb, the eldest of their seven children. She became a member of the Pilot Knob Baptist Church as a teenager and through the years had also attended Owsley Fork, Red Lick and Faith Decision Baptist Church. She and Luther were longtime volunteer caretakers of Pilot Knob Cemetery. A hard worker, devoted to her family and home, she retired from Dresser Industries where she made many lifelong friends. Her chicken and dumplings were always a hit at family dinners, potlucks, reunions and church functions.

In addition to her husband and parents she also lost an infant son, her daughter Patty Hayes and two sons-in-law, Tex Scenters and Steve Hayes. Her siblings, Lelia, Cecil, Kenneth, Geraldine, Ronald and Barbara also preceded her in death.

Her daughters, Teresa Gail Scenters, Kathy Cox and her husband Fred, and Kaye Deaton and her husband Steve all survive, along with her 6 grandsons, Mark (Debra) Scenters, Andrew (Patty) Hayes, Greg Cox, Adam (Kelsey Scenters), Luke (Jennifer) Hayes, and Matt Cox. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

The family is grateful to all those who visited or called to check in on her during her illness, to Hospice Care Plus, and to Kim, Vonda, Carmela, Pam and Melissa who cared for her so well.

Visitation will be Monday evening from 6 to 9 pm at Davis and Powell Funeral Home. Pastor Jimmy Closterman will conduct funeral services at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 29 also at Davis and Powell, you may view the service livestream at www.davisandpowellfuneralhome.com . Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will follow in the Pilot Knob Cemetery
