Betty O’Brien, aged 75, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025. Fiercely independent, endlessly witty, and never one to sugarcoat the truth (or her coffee), Betty lived life on her own terms — with a sharp mind, a sharper tongue.

Born in Miami, FL in 1949, Betty grew up with a love for books, lively conversation, and people who could match her sarcasm. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and a loyal friend — even when life and relationships got complicated. She had a soft spot for animals and the remarkable ability to find humor even in the darkest of moments.

In her final months, Betty was lovingly cared for by her dear friends of 25 years, Amy Rubes and Amanda Campbell, who stood by her through every doctor’s visit, every late-night call, and every “this place has the worst food” rant. Their friendship was the kind that most people hope to have at least once in a lifetime — unconditional, fierce, and full of laughter even in the hardest moments.

She is survived by her daughter, and her twin granddaughters, as well as a legacy of resilience, wit, and strength. Betty was also survived in spirit by the many friends whose lives she touched.

In her final years, Betty’s constant companion was Reo, a rambunctious Boston Terrier she adopted from the Leon County Humane Society. Reo went everywhere with her, proudly dressed in Alabama-themed accessories that only Betty could pull off with such flair. Her love for Reo reflected a lifelong compassion for animals.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Betty’s honor to the Leon County Humane Society at: www.leoncountyhumane.org/donate.

A private remembrance will be held in accordance with Betty’s wishes. In her memory, please consider adopting a shelter pet, sharing a story that makes you laugh, or raising a glass (filled with something strong) to a woman who never stopped telling it like it is.
