Billie Jean Winkfield Hopson, 76, went home to be with the Lord on October 17, 2025. Billie Jean was born on March 17, 1949, in Frankfort, KY to the late Wilgus "Billy" Winkfield Sr. and Jean Miller Barnett Winkfield.
She grew up in Dayton, OH and graduated from Roosevelt High School where she was a member of the track and swim team. She also worked at Elder-Beerman and the public library in Dayton for several years. She gave her life to the Lord at Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton, OH. While residing in Dayton, Billie Jean met the love of her life, Douglas Hopson. Billie Jean and Douglas were married for close to forty years prior to his death. Upon Douglas's death, Billie Jean returned to Frankfort where she worked for ISS Solutions as well as cared for many relative and non-relative children. Although Billie didn't have children of her own, as the eldest, she often served as a mother to her siblings throughout their childhood. Billie Jean is survived by her sisters, Mae Catherine Strozier (Dayton, OH), Helen Marie Osborne, Dorothy Ann Hayden, Margie Denise Mulder, Lillian Elizabeth Winkfield, Raychelle Lorraine Winkfield, one brother Wilgus Winkfield Jr. (all of Frankfort), and one aunt, Jenny Barnett (Louisville, KY). Billie Jean also leaves behind many nieces, great-nieces, three great-great nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, and other extended family members. Billie Jean was preceded in death by her parents Wilgus "Billy" Winkfield Sr. and Jean Miller Barnett Winkfield, her brother Robert Lewis Winkfield, and her husband Douglas Hopson.
A celebration of life and repast will be held on November 8, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Capital City Activity Center, 202 Medical Heights Dr. Frankfort, KY.
