Billy Cheek Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Acree-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory on Feb. 3, 2026.
Billy Joe Cheek, age 78, of Eastanollee and Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away on January 30, 2026.

A man of boundless spirit, quick wit, and a kind heart, Billy Joe could make anyone feel welcome and at ease whether you were a lifelong friend, a neighbor, or one of the many he met on a jobsite.

Born on April 27, 1947, Billy Joe was the son of the late Ralph and Flora Mae Cheek, one of eight children. He graduated from Stephens County High School in 1966, and shortly thereafter married Hellon Meece, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage until her passing in 2001. Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and family.

Billy Joe made a lifelong career in the construction industry. A skilled craftsman, he worked in carpentry, drywall, and commercial construction. He spent many years as a Superintendent with New South Construction overseeing a variety of projects from schools and churches to high rises. He retired in 2021.

Billy Joe had a wild spirit and a steadfast heart. He was wise, unwavering, witty, and true to his word and someone people trusted for sound advice and steady guidance. He had a kind smile that lit up his entire face and a presence that made you feel both welcomed and understood.

He loved the outdoors and adventure: racing motorcycles in his younger years, hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling - often in pursuit of his next hunting or fishing trip. Above all else, he delighted in his loved ones, his children, their friends, and especially his grandchildren, who knew him lovingly as Papa Joe and brought him immeasurable pride and joy.

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hellon Cheek; his parents; and his brothers, Charlie and Jimmy Cheek.

He is survived by his loving partner and devoted caregiver, Brenda Anderson of Eastanollee; his son and daughter-in-law, Ty & Ellen Cheek of Spartanburg; his daughter and son-in-law, Shea & Tyler Brislin of Watkinsville; and his four grandchildren, Collin, Elise, Jae, and Colleen. He is also survived by a brother and four sisters, many nieces and nephews and cherished friends and extended family.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Northeast Georgia Palliative Care, Family Hospice, and Haven Memory Care of Athens for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Billy Joe at the end of his life.

Those wishing to honor Billy Joe may choose to send flowers or make a memorial donation to the National MS Society.

Billy Joe Cheek leaves behind a legacy of strength, integrity, loyalty, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. May we all find peace in knowing the Heavens roared with glory to welcome him home to a world full of everlasting youth and joy!

Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, 3 p.m. in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home, 90 S Pond St, Toccoa, GA 30577. Visitation with family and friends will take place from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m.
