On this day, we honor the wonderful life of Billy "Bill" Joe Dayton, age 93, who departed this life on July 21, 2025, and entered into his heavenly home to be with his Lord and Savior.
Born on November 11, 1931, in the mountains of Canton, North Carolina, Bill was a son of the hills, and his roots ran deep. He was the son of the late Thomas Dayton (1884-1948) and the late Juanita Mason Dayton (1893-1962). He was proud of his family heritage and often enjoyed sharing wonderful stories about his childhood in his hometown – stories that brought laughter and a smile to those around him.
Mr. Dayton served his country with courage and honor in the United States Army, fighting in combat during the Korean War. Rising to the rank of Corporal, he was awarded several medals that reflected his valor, including the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal. These were symbols of his sacrifice, discipline, and courage.
Bill built a lasting legacy with his time at Champion International, where he retired with 29 years of dedicated service. He was known not only for his strong work ethic but also for the loyal friendships that he formed during his working years.
At heart, Bill was an outdoorsman, always happy with a fishing pole in hand or setting out on a hunting trip. He never let the natural beauty of our world go unnoticed.
A soldier of strong faith, Bill was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. He had served as a Sunday School teacher and a Deacon, and with a Bible close at hand, Bill was always ready to share his testimony. His faith wasn't just spoken -it was lived. Bill inspired others not just with words, but by the way he lived his life each day.
Above all, Bill's heart runneth over with love for his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and great-grandfather. His legacy will live on forever through each of them.
In the words of his family, "Bill was Bill." He was quite the prankster, and he was truly one of a kind. His life was a testament to the strength of faith and family. We give thanks for his life, and our hearts are filled with gratitude that we were blessed to know him, love him, and learn from him. He shall never be forgotten.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his precious wife of 68 years, Ruth Alice Dayton, who passed away in 2019.
Surviving are his son, Mike Dayton and Pamela ; grandchildren, Russell Dayton and Lexie, and Ashley Owen and Jonathan; great-grandchildren, Kennedy Owen, Titus Owen, and Ellie Mae Dayton; a sister, Lucille Rogers, and many dear friends.
A time of remembrance to honor and celebrate Bill's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 1, 2025. Pastor Reverend Barry Clark will be officiating.
