Billy E. Leslie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, passed away on August 20, 2025, at the age of 99 in Sarasota, Florida. Born on December 28, 1925, in Leary, Georgia, Billy lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and love. His journey began in the small town of Leary, but it was in the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, that he would eventually build a home with his cherished wife, Joan C. Leslie, whom he wed on June 13, 1952. Together, they shared an incredible 52 years of marriage until her passing.
Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, as well as his parents, Ernest and Willie Leslie, and his beloved sister, Emmy Hawksworth. He is survived by his four adoring children: Dale Leslie, Dianne Mason, Susan Neill, and Tracy Hecht. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his grandchildren: Brian Leslie, Eric Leslie, Dana Castillo-Reyes, Katie Neill, Jon Neill, Keirstin Hecht, and Kendall Hecht. Billy was also a proud great-grandfather to Cole Leslie, Nathan Leslie, Aryanna Neill, Kadence Neil, Catalina Bechara, and Tommy Neill, and a great-great-grandfather to Derrick Leslie.
A proud veteran, Billy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His service took him to Palmyra, Hawaii, where he worked diligently as an Electrician's Mate. This experience laid the foundation for a life filled with remarkable tradesmanship. Billy was a true master of his craft; in addition to being an expert tile setter, he excelled in carpentry and electrical work. He had a remarkable talent for building everything from houses to houseboats, always taking great pride in the quality of his work.
Before he donned his Navy uniform, Billy began his career as a movie machine operator-a job that ignited a lifelong passion for films. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to the United States Post Office, where he continued to serve his community with unwavering commitment.
Billy remained an active member of various organizations throughout his life, including the American Legion and The Order of the Masons. He found joy in community service and cherished the friendships he made along the way. In his leisure time, Billy loved fishing, boating, riding his bike, woodworking, and solving puzzles. He had a particular fondness for popcorn and pecans and enjoyed nothing more than sharing a good movie with family and friends.
Billy's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love for family. He possessed a gentle spirit that touched everyone he met, and his legacy will continue to live on through his children and grandchildren. His humor, kindness, and unwavering support made him not just a father and grandfather, but also a mentor and friend to many.
A funeral service to honor Billy's remarkable life will be held on September 5, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his honor to Fisher House at www.fisherhouse.org, a charity that supports military families.
As we bid farewell to a truly exceptional man, we celebrate the life of Billy E. Leslie, who taught us the value of love, hard work, and community. His spirit will remain forever in our hearts.
