Billy E. Stamey, a distinguished veteran, and husband of Shelby Jean Porter Stamey, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born on July 13, 1936, in Seneca, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Horace Eugene Stamey and Carrie Elmina Burkett Stamey.

After enlisting in the United States Army in 1955, Billy devoted 20 years of his life to military service, ultimately achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Throughout his tenure, he was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, where he served as a drill sergeant. His commitment to service extended to four campaigns in Vietnam, where he courageously earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for acts of valor in combat. He was a tank commander and served in the 5th, 9th, and 25th infantry while in Vietnam.

Following his retirement from the Army, Billy transitioned to civilian life, becoming a valued member of the staff at Clemson University.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Billy was a man of many talents. He found joy in woodworking and had a passion for gardening. Additionally, he was an avid collector of pocketknives.

Billy is survived by his wife, Shelby Jean Porter Stamey, who stood by his side throughout their life together. He leaves behind a loving family, including his son, Jimmy Stamey (Diana) of Pendleton; daughters, Rebecca Stamey of Central and Dianna Bolt (Frank) of Six Mile; as well as grandchildren Ashley Stamey, Jon Stamey, Christopher Bolt, Melanie Oliver, Kaitlin Vaughan, Lacey Shove, Sada Dempsey, and Reese Townsend. His great-grandchildren, Bradley Stamey, Zoey Smith, Kinley Oliver, Cohen Oliver, Krislyn Oliver, Koral Oliver, Layton Green, and another great-grandchild on the way, were a source of joy and pride for Billy. He is also survived by his sisters, Judy Crocker and Frankie Whitfield, and his brother, Roger Stamey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Stamey, and his sisters, Barbara Teat, Caroline Bolt, and Linda Gail Stamey.
