Charles Robert Hulan, known to all as Bob, has gone to the great fishing hole in the sky on May 21, 2023, at the age of 77. Born on April 25, 1946, in Austin, Texas, Bob lived a life that was as big and bright as the Lone Star State itself. He passed away peacefully in his beloved hometown of Austin, surrounded by the love and laughter of his family.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Dianne Hulan, who managed to put up with his endless fishing stories and unwavering support for the University of Texas Longhorns. Also left to carry on his legacy of laughter are his sister, Ann Herrera and husband Tom; son, Cullen Hulan and husband, Wes Rowe; stepdaughter, Jennifer Haddock and husband, Bruce; stepson, Robert Love and wife, Aimee; granddaughters, Jesslin Verastegi and husband, Josh, Jayden Mejorado-Haddock, and Armineh Love; and great-grandchildren, Odon, Enzo, and Everleigh, who will no doubt hear tales of their great-grandpa's fishing prowess for years to come.
Bob's intelligence shone through in his studies at the University of Texas, where he earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration in 1977. As a staunch fan of the University, he could often be found cheering on his Longhorns and proudly proclaiming "Hook 'Em" to anyone within earshot. A lifetime member of the Texas Exes, Bob was a true embodiment of the phrase, "You can take the man out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of the man."
Bob's dedication to his country and community was evident in his service as a member of the United States Air Force Reserve from 1967-1973. He continued to serve his community as the CFO of the University of Texas Exes for 28 wonderful years, making sure the finances were as big and bold as the state itself. Bob also spent 10 years volunteering with the Red Cross, assisting with disaster relief all over the country. No doubt, his sense of humor brought a much-needed smile to the faces of those affected by tragedy.
An avid outdoorsman, Bob could often be found casting his line at Lake Travis, hoping to reel in the big one. Though, like any good fisherman, the size of his catch seemed to grow with each retelling of the tale. In the words of the great comedian, George Carlin, "Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in old clothes." Bob wore those old clothes with pride and brought joy to all who heard his fish tales.
Intelligent, thoughtful, and loving - these are just a few of the words that describe Bob. His wit and humor were infectious, and he had a knack for making even the most mundane moments memorable. As the late, great Robin Williams once said, "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." Bob carried that spark with him throughout his life, and his laughter will echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
So, as we bid farewell to Bob, let's remember him with a smile on our faces, a fishing pole in hand, and the spirit of the Longhorns forever in our hearts. Hook 'Em, Bob - we know you're reeling in the big one up there.
