It is with profound sadness that we remember Bobby Mendez Sr., age 58, who passed away on April 2, 2025. Bob was born on January 17, 1967, in Lubbock, Texas, where he became the cherished son of Leo and Mary, and a beloved brother to Leo, Ricky, Lora, Jessica, and Adrian.
A proud father to his four children—Bobby, Marissa, Ethan, and Xavier (Moby)—and a doting grandfather to Tyson, Myles, and Clyde, Bob's greatest joy came from his family. He could often be found bragging about their achievements, demonstrating the love and pride he carried for them every single day. The "Mendez Genes" lived on in his children, with their unique quirks always affectionately referred to as a “Mendez Thing.”
Growing up in Lubbock, Bob shone both on and off the field at Cooper High School, where he played quarterback for the Pirates and showcased his athleticism as a pole vaulter. Graduating in 1985, Bob's journey led him through a scholarship in drama at West Texas, followed by his bold move to California, where he earned his bachelor's degree from Cal State University and later his master's degree from Pepperdine College.
Bob dedicated over 25 years to education as a teacher and coach, beginning at Warren High School in California, where he taught government and coached football for 13 years. He returned to Lubbock Cooper High School, continuing his passion for teaching government and economics. Throughout his career, Bob was not just an instructor; he was a mentor who poured countless hours into his students, always striving to bring out the best in them. His achievements were numerous, including coaching the golf team to state competitions and leading the debate team with great success.
Beyond academics and athletics, Bob had a zest for life that encompassed his many hobbies. Whether it was hitting the golf course, playing billiards, or engaging in friendly football rivalries, his competitive spirit ensured there was never a dull moment. If you played a sport with Bob, you likely have an unforgettable story that showcases his passion and playful nature.
Bob will be deeply missed, yet his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. We invite everyone to share their stories and memories, ensuring that the love Bob had for each of us remains vibrant in our lives.
He was a Father, Son, Brother, Uncle, Teacher, and Coach—a remarkable man whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
