Bonita King Durell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stephen C. Gregory and Son Cremation Service on Dec. 15, 2025.
Bonita Jeanne King Durell, a mother, educator, and sharp-witted friend, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Burlington, Vermont, at the Ethan Allen Residence, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 84. Born on March 29, 1941, in Malone, New York.
Bonita was a graduate of the College of New Rochelle, and obtained her masters degree from Hunter College. She began her career as a biology teacher at the New York Archdiocese, where her enthusiasm for learning left a lasting mark on her students. Her innate curiosity led her to a successful second career in technology, where she thrived managing technical teams for a global company from its Manhattan headquarters. She retired after 9/11.
She was predeceased by her parents, William A. King and Regina B. King; and her brother, Gregory J. King.
Bonita is survived by her children and their spouses-Sean Maloney, wife Andrea Maloney and granddaughters Caitlin and Ina Maloney; Kathleen Maloney and husband Robert Hooper; Noah Durell, wife Bethanne and grandchildren Parker and Logan; and Jacob "Jake" Durell and wife Jena Durell. She is also survived by her sisters, Denise "Peter" King Hegarty and husband Terence Hegarty, and Michelle King and husband Kevin Moran.
Bonita also leaves behind her beloved niece and nephews, Rebecca, Ian and Simon Hegarty. Each felt her support, keen interest in their lives, and the joy she took in their accomplishments.
Bonita's love for the world was expansive-she read voraciously, delighted in classical music, and completed crosswords with enviable speed. She could find beauty anywhere: in nature, architecture, people, animals and in the small details others might overlook. She had a gift for describing what she saw with clarity and grace, leaving those around her newly aware of the wonder in everyday life. She was also a gifted artist and poet.
Her family will miss her sharp mind, humor, fierce loyalty, and ability to illuminate the world with words. The family wishes to express gratitude for the care she received from the nurses, staff and administration at The Ethan Allen Residence.
A service will be held on December 20, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Helen's Catholic Church in the hamlet of Chasm Falls, New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Ethan Allen Residence (donorbox.org/living-well-group), the organization that cared for her in her last years. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Bonita, please visit our Tree Store.
