Bonita "Bonnie" Wiersig

Bonita Jean "Bonnie" Kindschi Wiersig died peacefully on January 19th, 2018 in Bryan, Texas at the age of 91.

Bonnie is survived by her children, Jon and Karen Wiersig, Longview, Texas, Jean Wiersig Wolff, Bryan, Texas, and Jeremy and Suzanne Wiersig, San Antonio, Texas; her grandchildren, Jake and Jordan O'Brien, Shreveport, Louisiana, Madeline Wiersig, San Antonio and College Station, Texas, and Jacob Wiersig, San Antonio and College Station, Texas. Bonnie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years who passed away in July of 2017, Donald "Don" Wiersig, her parents, Elmer and Grace Kindschi of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin and her brother, Jerrald "Jerry" Kindschi, also of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. Family was everything to Bonnie, and she particularly loved being "Bon Bon" to her grandchildren.

Bonnie was born on July 10, 1926 in Sauk County, Wisconsin. She received her Bachelor of Home Economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin in 1947. She also received a Masters in Guidance and Counseling from Texas A&M University in 1970.

She married Don in August of 1952 after being introduced by his brother Ray, who taught with Bonnie at Two Rivers, Wisconsin. After marrying in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, Bonnie and Don moved to Colby, Wisconsin and had a dairy farm in combination with Don's large animal veterinary practice and Bonnie teaching high school. They did this for 10 years before leaving Wisconsin and its cold winters behind them as Don pursued educating future veterinarians in the grand state of Texas.

Bonnie devoted tremendous time and energy as a teacher. She taught for a total of 29 years in junior high school and high school in Home Economics in Wisconsin and also in vocational education at Bryan ISD. Her teaching career encompassed schools at Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Colby, Wisconsin, and Bryan, Texas (1968 - 1986.) Bonnie was a proud member of both Texas State Teachers' Association and Brazos County Retired School Personnel organization. Her calm, caring and focused demeanor in the classroom was admired by faculty and staff.

Bonnie's pastimes were many, particularly during her retirement years. She and Don loved to country and western dance and could regularly be seen three times a week "cutting a rug" at the local VFW and Texas Hall of Fame. They put other dancers to shame! They loved to travel the world over and learn from the many cultures that they visited. Together, Bonnie and Don traveled to all 7 continents and over 110 countries, as well as most of the 50 states and had many stories to share about their adventures. It was evident that Bonnie had a zest for living. She was a true example on how to truly live one's life to the fullest.

Bonnie was also extremely generous in her time and effort to numerous causes. She got many hours of satisfaction knitting newborn baby caps for St. Joseph's Knitting Circle during her retirement years. She always enjoyed sewing and cross-stitch, and she taught a number of girls over the years to sew in her summer sewing classes. She was an active and dedicated member of Bethel Lutheran Church of Bryan for over 50 years, where she belonged to the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) and taught Sunday school for several years. Bonnie was a fabulous cook and a wonderful baker. Some of the best family times were around her table. She so enjoyed cooking for her family and loved ones, and those wonderful times with her will be sorely missed, along with her roast beef dinners and graham cracker pie!

Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Tuesday, January 23rd at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 24th at Bethel Lutheran Church, 4221 Boonville Road in Bryan with a burial to follow at Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery. A reception at the church will also follow the burial and everyone is invited to attend. The family would like to thank Bonnie's loving caregivers Sherryl Cunningham, Louisa Navarro, Pam Davenport, Brad Myers, and the caring staff at the Isle of Watercrest. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving such loving care to our mother over the years. You definitely added to her quality of life, and we are immensely grateful.
