Boyce L. Nicholson, Sr., beloved brother, father, grandfather and uncle, 81, of
Memphis, TN, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch, MS.
Boyce "Bob" was born May 20, 1944 in
Poplar Bluff, MO to Buck and Vera Nicholson. Bob was the second of four children, and he and his siblings, along with their parents, cleared the land and farmed in Butler County since the 1940's. All four siblings attended and graduated from Butler County/Fisk schools.
Bob joined the Navy after high school and was trained as a medical corpsman. Although he was a Navy man, he was attached to a Marine unit during his deployment to Vietnam. He rarely spoke of his time in Vietnam, but was always a proud veteran.
After his military service, Bob joined the United States Postal Service where he worked for over 30 years. He delivered mail in Germantown, TN for many of those years. During those years he also delivered papers for the Memphis Press Scimitar and the Commercial Appeal. During the 1970's and 80's, Bob served actively as Deacon at Capleville Baptist Church, also offering his time to paint their Outreach buses and improve the grounds. He volunteered as assistant coach of his son's baseball team, and served as a leader in Cub Scouts as a Den Leader and Pack Leader of Pack 242 in Memphis.
Bob had an artistic streak that showed itself in his leatherwork hobby and stained glass pieces. He loved practicing both hobbies and shared his artwork and knowledge with others.
After retiring from the US Postal Service (his first retirement), Bob went on to work with his daughter and son-in-law for 10 years as Safety Officer for Herin Mechanical Contractors.
After his second retirement, Bob moved to Byhalia, MS to be closer to family. He spent his last years either on his tractor, his lawn mower or his golf cart in a large yard and garden or sitting on his porch watching the hummingbirds, cardinals and squirrels. During each season, Bob would enjoy watching a baseball game with his St. Louis Cardinals or a good football game. He adopted Mississippi State University and their football team, and he attended many games in Starkville.
Bob always loved "the farm" in Fisk, and he visited his nephew Scot King and his wife Tracy, their daughter Monica Woolem (Robbie) and their children Elsie and Emmit there regularly throughout his entire life. Family get-togethers at "the farm" were always treasured by all.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Buck and Vera Nicholson of
Fisk, MO, his brother Gary Nicholson of
Fisk, MO and his sister Sherry Brown of Huntsville, AL. Bob is survived by his older sister, Joyce Schunk of
Fisk, MO, and his beloved brother in law Paul Brown (husband of Sherry) and beloved sister in law Betty Nicholson (wife of Gary).
Bob leaves three children, Cindy, John and Bobby: Cindy Herin (Joe) of Byhalia, MS, John Nicholson (Elizabeth) of Starkville, MS and Boyce "Bobby" Nicholson, Jr. (Lori Krovitz) of Southaven, MS. Bob was proud of his grandchildren, Lindsey Herin (Charlie Laken), Maggie Herin and Alex Herin (Erin Anderson), as well as Mary Bess Brooks (Blake), Ben Nicholson and Daniel Nicholson.
Bob also loved his extended family, including nieces, nephews, cousins and more. His cousin Debbie Bermudez and her child Sam each played a special role in his life. His other nieces and nephews include Holly Smith, Shelia Hendrickson, Debbie Solomon, Teresa Rochelle Olmstead, Scot King, Tim Schunk and David Brown.
Bob enjoyed time outdoors, and he cooked the meals for the men in deer camp for many years. Bob shared the deer camp with Paul Priori, his co-worker at the Post Office and his best friend for several decades. Bob will be remembered by those who loved him as generous, and he will be missed.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at White-Sanders Funeral Home in
