Boyd received many decorations for his service, his highest award being the Bronze Star for heroism.

He attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, and was honorably discharged in Dayton, Ohio, on February 1, 1979. Boyd was a true patriot: after his military career, he embarked on a second career in the Department of Defense, and served another 20 years as an Air Force civilian employee, before retiring at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in January, 2001, dedicating a total of 48 years to the service of his Country. Boyd received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1983, and Master of Science degree in 1985, both from Central Michigan University.

He has 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

Boyd's best buddy was his little dog, Rugar. Boyd was very outgoing; he never knew a stranger, and loved to be around people. He also loved to travel, visiting 12 countries and 49 of the 50 United States. Boyd loved spending his time with family, and driving his truck and Corvette in the Smokey Mountains.

Boyd was of the Protestant faith and a Born-Again Christian. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
