Brenda Jean Yarbrough Veal passed away peacefully in Winston-Salem, NC on November 7, 2023 after an extended illness.
She was born January 1, 1947 to Paul W. and Charlcie Duncan Yarbrough. She was the first baby born that year in Troup County, GA. Brenda attended the Hogansville School System and graduated as an honor student with the Class of 1965. She was Class President and awarded a scholarship to attend Georgia Baptist Nursing School in Atlanta. She met the "man of her dreams", Henry Lamar Veal, in high school, and they married in 1967. They welcomed their son, Christopher Lamar Veal, in 1970.
The Veals lived in Fayetteville, GA. for over 35 years where Brenda served as an educator in the Clayton County School System. Brenda received degrees from Clayton Junior College, Georgia State University and West Georgia University. She truly loved the children and was awarded Teacher of the Year during her career. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Winston-Salem, NC to be near their son.
Brenda's favorite time of the year was the Fall. She enjoyed genealogy, even back when combing through physical records at libraries and government offices was the norm. She loved to eat green plums with salt, and spent leisure time watching crime shows. Brimming with compassion, Brenda taught her only child and her students to treat people with equality and to respect all animals, great and small.
Brenda is predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Henry Lamar Veal. She is survived by her son, Christopher Lamar Veal; future daughter-in-law, Erin Ventre; brothers, Daryl (Linda) Yarbrough of LaGrange; David (Teresa) Yarbrough of Valdosta; sister, Sharon Yarbrough (Russell) Melton of Pine Mountain; two nieces; two nephews; four great-nieces; three great-nephews; a great-great niece; mother-in-law, Mildred Veal of the Lone Oak Community; and many others through marriage.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 11, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Pastor Daryl Yarbrough will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, prior to the service.
