Brent Schlapper Obituary

Dr. Brent Davis Schlapper, 74, passed away Jan. 9, 2025, surrounded by his wife and sons. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel in DeLand, with the family receiving friends 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand.
Dr. Schlapper was born June 2, 1950, in Sedalia, Missouri, and relocated in 1951 to the small town of Pittsburg in southeastern Kansas.
He pursued his education at Pittsburg State University, where he met the love of his life, Miss Nancy Blessant, whom he married in 1972.
With a longstanding passion for biology and medicine, Brent earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees from Pittsburg State University. He then attended the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, which was also the alma mater of his grandfather, who graduated from the institution in 1901.
Dr. Schlapper completed his internship in North Miami Beach in 1979. Following this, he and Nancy sought out a charming small town in Florida and discovered DeLand.
He established one of the busiest family practices in West Volusia, serving the community for 40 years. Additionally, he contributed to the County of Volusia's Risk Management Division for more than 15 years.
In 1980, Brent became the first doctor of osteopathy to serve at West Volusia Memorial Hospital in DeLand, later assuming the role of chief of staff 2003-05.
After retiring from his family practice, he initiated an addiction therapy practice in 2016, which he continued until 2024.
Dr. Schlapper is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Schlapper; three sons, Craig, Corey and Christopher; and eight grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Arthritis Foundation. Allen-Summerhill is in charge.

VERY saddening to see this. I always thought of him because he was such a nice DR. He's been my family Dr since I was 8 years old. I never will forget walking into his practice across from the Deland hospital in that not so fancy spot. He helped when I got older in his Addiction Therapy role! He will forever be respected and remembered as a wonderful man/Dr. God bless him and his family.

I´m so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr Schlapper. When I moved here from ct I didn´t have a primary Dr and this was in 2016 he says to me you do now give her the papers to fill out.He not only was my Dr he was my friend he told me so many things to do when your sick with Covid like I was right away he sent the pharmacy medicine for me so the Covid wouldn´t get really bad.He taught me so many things to do for my husbands arthritis he was the best Dr I ever had. What Dr makes you feel like your best friends well he sure did it´s going to be so hard to find another Dr like him and he left no one hanging he sent out test messages of places to go but none like him.You will truly be missed.Thank you for all the years you helped me and I have one of the best cardiologist because of you.I send my condolences and prayers to his wife his sons and grandchildren my prayers are with you ,God Rest his soul

Thank you for all the years you have given to us. Dr. Schlapper.

He was my Doctor 1st and then he hired me to work with this new DO coming to town to work with him. Dr. Bruce Rankin. I will always remember his humor. He told the story of hunting rats at the dump for his thesis on cataracts in rats. It was hilarious. He was caring and generous. Oh, the wonderful parties at his house. He was a wimp though when it came to having blood drawn or shots. Which I have done for him. "Are you going to hurt me?" he would say over and over before I would do it. He will be missed so much. He helped so many in this town. Glenda Gilbert
