Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parker-Millard Funeral Service and Crematory on Jul. 17, 2025.
On June 14th, Columbia entrepreneur and business manager, Brett Wisman, 52, passed away in his sleep after a several years' long battle with diabetes, kidney disease and finally renal failure. Brett was the owner of the resale store Consign and Design, formerly located in downtown Columbia, for six years.
Brett was born in North Platte, Nebraska, on July 8, 1972. As a child, he accompanied his parents on several job relocations, including 2 years in Panama where they were doing volunteer religious service These moves eventually brought him to Union, Missouri, and high school in Washington, Missouri. During his high school years, he was very active showing his horses and acting and singing in multiple productions. Post high school job opportunities lured him to Columbia where, over time, he managed a number of small retail businesses and attended Moberly Area Community College. In addition to his professional life, he also exercised his unique theatrical and entertainment skills with performances at the Soco Club, creating the funny and outrageous character, Marissa Dupray.
Eventually, the opportunity arose for him to combine a keen sense of design, a refined artistic flair and his accumulated managerial experiences, to create a higher end resale shop. There, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci and other top brand clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry and interior design items found new homes and his consignors changed their treasures into cash. Customers came to rely on his discriminating taste, ability to coordinate colors, and his knowledge of styles and trends to inform their choices as they added prestigious new items to their wardrobes and homes. His sincerity, directness and willingness to lend an ear made many patrons into enduring friends. Customers would comment that the boutique nature of the shop compared favorably with resale shops in larger markets like New York and Chicago.
Unfortunately, when his kidney disease moved to end stage renal failure, it was too taxing for him to continue the store once he started dialysis.
While a businessman, he was active in the activities and promotions of the Downtown District and contributed to many of the charities which regularly seek support from downtown businesses. He served for a time in a volunteer capacity on the Central Missouri Stop Human Trafficking Coalition Board and was a member of Columbia's Cosmopolitan Breakfast Club where he liked the club's efforts to support research for a cure for diabetes.
He is survived by his parents, Kern and Barbara Wisman of Columbia, an aunt and uncle in Colorado, Jan and Randy Babcock, an aunt and uncle in Nebraska, Karen and Michael Morris, an uncle and aunt in Texas, Eric and Connie Wisman and numerous cousins and cousins once removed in Colorado, Texas, and Nebraska.
The family has identified two organizations for memorials: The American Kidney Fund, https://www.kidneyfund.org/ and Spectrum Health Care, a donations-based health care service which also assists people who are having trouble paying for their health insurance. http://spectrumhealthcare.org/
